to be obedient to them, as thy word commands me. Make me kind [to my brothers and sisters and]* to every one, even as my Saviour was good and kind to me, when he came to die for us, to bring us unto God. Lord, hear me and bless me, and save me, for Jesus's sake. Amen.

A CHILD'S EVENING HYMN.

LORD, look upon a little child,

By nature sinful, rude, and wild;
Oh! put thy gracious hands on me,
And make me all I ought to be.

Make me thy child, a child of God,

Washed in my Saviour's precious blood:
And my whole heart from sin set free,
A little vessel full of thee.

A star of early dawn, and bright,
Shining within thy sacred light;
A beam of grace to all around,

A little spot of hallow'd ground.

O Saviour, take me to thy breast,

And bless me that I may be blest;
Both when I wake and when I sleep,
Thy little lamb in safety keep.

To be left out when there are none.

A CHILD'S EVENING PRAYER.

O LORD, bless me, and make me a child of God. Forgive all my sins, and make my heart clean. Make me a good and holy child. Make me like the blessed Jesus.

Oh! grant me grace, to seek the Lord early, and to find him; and to love that Saviour, who first loved us, and died upon the cross for our salvation.

Preserve and keep me when I am asleep, for thou dost never slumber nor sleep. Bless and keep my dear father and mother, sisters and brothers; and dwell among us, till we dwell with thee for ever; and when we die, may we sleep in Jesus, and awake from the grave, to see his glorious face in heaven, and to be for ever with the Lord. Lord, hear me for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

HYMN FOR A SICK PERSON.

PSALM XXXI. 15.

My times are in thy hand,

O God, I wish them there;
My life, my friends, my soul I leave

Entirely to Thy care.

My times are in Thy hand,

Whatever they may be,

Pleasing or painful, dark or bright,

As best may seem to Thee.

My times are in Thy hand,
Why should I doubt or fear?
A Father's hand will never cause

His child a needless tear.

My times are in Thy hand,

Jesus the Crucified;

The hand my many sins have pierced,
Is now my guard and guide.

My times are in Thy hand,

I'll always trust in Thee,

"Till I have left this weary land,

And all thy glory see.

PRAYER FOR A SICK PERSON.

O GRACIOUS Lord, who dost not willingly grieve nor afflict the children of men, mercifully look upon him, who is here on the bed of sickness: assuage his pain, abate his sufferings, and restore the voice of joy and health to his dwelling. Oh! make thou all his bed in his sickness, and comfort him when he lieth down and when he riseth up.

But especially, we pray thee to sanctify this his affliction to his soul's health and salvation. Oh! grant him thy Spirit, that he may not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when rebuked of thee. And though this chastening, for the present, is grievous, yet, Lord, do thou make it yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness to him who is now exercised thereby.

Lord, may it soften and humble his heart, and lead him to the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world: Oh! wash away all his sins in the blood of Christ; and give him thy Holy Spirit, to make him

meet for an inheritance with the saints in light. Oh! teach him, that there is none other name under heaven whereby he can be saved, but the name of Jesus only.

Give him thy Spirit, that he may lean upon him, and feel that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin.

[And if he has already been led to the Saviour, and numbered among thy people, O Lord, give him more and more joy in believing; may he feel beneath him the everlasting arms and knowing that all things shall work together for good to them that love God, may he learn to glory in tribulation also: and may tribulation work patience in him; and patience experience; and experience hope: and that hope be one that maketh not ashamed, because of the love of God shed abroad in his heart, by the Holy Ghost given him.

May he feel that in all his afflictions, thou art afflicted, that he has a great High Priest in heaven, One who is touched with a feeling of our infirmities; and is able to succour them that are tempted, having suffered himself, being tempted. May he feel thy grace sufficient for him, and thy strength made perfect in weakness. Teach him rather to glory in infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon him: so when weak, may he be strong in the Lord. So may he have strong consolation, flying for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before him. And may this hope be as an anchor of his soul, both sure and stedfast, entering into that within the vail. *]

* District Visitors and others, who may use this prayer in the houses of the sick, may omit the following passage when there is reason to fear that the character prayed for, is not such as is described. (Rom. viii. 28.)

Thus, amid all the chances and changes of this mortal life, may he be stedfast in faith, joyful in hope, and rooted in charity; and so pass through the waves of this troublesome world, that finally he may come to the land of everlasting life, there to reign with thee, world without end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER TO BE USED BY A PERSON
VERY NEAR DEATH.

O LAMB of God, that takest away the sins of the world, take away my sin, give me thy peace: wash me in thy blood, sanctify me by thy Spirit. Prepare a place in heaven for me, and prepare my soul for that place, for thy name's sake. Amen.

PRAYER AT THE OPENING OF A SUNDAY SCHOOL.

ASSIST us mercifully with thy grace, O Lord, in the work of faith and labour of love, in which we would now engage. Pour out abundantly of thy Holy Spirit, upon all who are assembled here. May such of us as teach others, be ourselves taught of thee, the truth as it is in Jesus. And so adorn us with thy grace, and endue us with innocency of life, that we may be living epistles, known, and read of all men.

Bless all our teachers, O Lord, and sow the seed of eternal life in their hearts, that whatsoever in thy
