At this time no state was assisting (lit. was for help to) the Athenians except (the state of) the Platæensians; that (state) sent a thousand (of) soldiers. Therefore by the coming of these ten thousands of armed men were completed; which force was burning with a wonderful desire of fighting, from which it happened that Miltiades had more influence than (his) colleagues. For, impelled by his authority, the Athenians led forth their forces out of the city and pitched their camp in a proper place; then having the next day drawn up their army at the foot (lit. roots) of a mountain, over against (the enemy) with uncommon (lit. new) art, they joined battle with the utmost impetuosity. For trees had been laid down in many places, with this design, (namely) that they might be covered by the height of the mountains, and the cavalry of the enemy might be impeded by the line of trees, so that they (the Athenians) should not be inclosed in their multitude (i.e., the multitude of the enemy).

Datis, although he saw the place (was) not favourable for his (men), yet, relying on the number of his forces, was wishing to engage, and the rather because he thought it expedient to fight before the Lacedæmonians should come with aid. Therefore he drew out into the field a hundred (thousand) foot, and ten thousand horse, and joined battle. In which the Athenians prevailed so much by valour that they overthrew ten times (their) number of enemies, and so terrified (them) that the Persians sought (in their flight) not (their) camp, but (their) ships. Than which battle nothing hitherto is more famous. For no army so small ever (before) overthrew so great forces.

I. Translate :

FRENCH.

(d) Give instances of the definite article being used in French where it would not be used in English.

(e) What difference of meaning is there between plutôt and plus tôt, and between où and ou?

(f) Give the cardinal numbers from one to twenty-two, and the ordinal numbers from first to twentieth.

(g) Put in the plural the whole sentence- "Un domestique avait beaucoup à souffrir du caractère inégal de son maître."

2. How is the possessive case in nouns generally formed? How is it formed when the noun ends in an s" sound (like justice); or when it ends in "s" (like James)?

3. In what instances are adjectives compared (generally) by prefixing more and most?

Geography.-1. Explain, as you would to children, the terms source, spring, watershed, affluent, confluence, estuary; and illustrate them from what you know of any river in your own neighbourhood, or from the River Thames.

2. Describe, in words, the two sides of the Bristol Channel, and of the estuary of the Severn. What is the "bore"?

3. Where are Killarney, Achil Island, Glencoe, the Ochils, Melrose, and St. Abb's Head? Describe each as fully as you can. Composition.-Write from dictation the passage given out by the Inspector :

2. Describe fully the physical features and present condition of Italy, and the islands belonging to it. Say also how it was divided 30 years ago, and mention and describe the cities which were then capitals of different portions of it.

3. What are the great powers of Europe? How is it that they are stronger than others? Name and describe their capitals.

History.-1. Among the kings who reigned in Britain between 800 and 1066, give names and dates of the four whom you think most remarkable.
