GATTY (H. K. F.) EDITED BY. AUNT JUDY'S MAGAZINE for Young People. A Monthly Periodical Illustrated. Imp. 16mo. price 8d. ·

A good magazine for children and young persons must fulfil a number of conditions. There must be stories-stories told with that simplicity which is the test of the highest style of writing, and as difficult to attain as it is easy to read. There must be nothing sensational in the stories, yet they must be so interesting as to compete with the exciting and pernicious literature to which our young people are too often exposed at the present day. There should be good poetry, good historical studies, good geographical information. Natural history should be prominent, and must include the very latest knowledge. Above all, the pictures must be such as to attract little folk, and attractive pictures mean artists of the highest power. To obtain all these things and others like them is a very expensive undertaking, and one which deserves the support of all parents who wish to see wholesome books in their children's hands. All these conditions may be found fulfilled, with more or less completeness, in "Aunt Judy's Magazine."'-Guardian.

AUNT JUDY'S MAGAZINE Volumes. Imperial 16mo. handsomely bound. Containing Stories, Songs, Music, Papers on Natural History, Fairy Tales, &c. With numerous Illustrations. Vols. for 1867 to 1875, 7s. 6d. each; from 1876, 8s. 6d. each. Some of the early volumes may be had at a reduced price.

GIFFEN (R.) STOCK EXCHANGE SECURITIES: an Essay on the General Causes of Fluctuation in their Price. By Robert Giffen. Enlarged by an Appendix of Evidence given before the Royal Commission on the Stock Exchange. Demy 8vo. 8s. 6d.

'An able and interesting book on a subject which possesses very great interest for a large class of the community.'-Times.

Mr. Giffen has made use of his varied opportunities, and has given us a very valuable contribution towards the solution of problems which deserve from political economists more consideration than they have hitherto received.'-Saturday Review.

'I would strongly recommend the perusal of this book to all those who are desirous to invest upon a sound basis of common sense, and more particularly to that class who invest not only in the expectation of obtaining interest upon their money, but with a view to the value of their investments increasing.'-Truth.

'Mr. Giffen's book is an important one.'-British Trade Journal.

ESSAYS IN FINANCE. The Cost of the Franco-German War of 1870-71-The Depreciation of Gold since 1848-The Liquidations of 1873-76 -Why the Depression of Trade is so much greater in Raw-material Producing Countries than in the Manufacturing Countries-Foreign Competition The Excess of Imports Recent Accumulations of Capital in the United Kingdom-Notes on the Depreciation of Silver Mr. Gladstone's Work in Finance-Taxes on Land-The Reduction of the National DebtThe Taxation and Representation of Ireland-The Case against Bimetallism -On the Fall of Prices of Commodities in Recent Years. 2nd edition. Demy 8vo. price 10s. 6d.

It is impossible to read a page of these essays without being struck by the careful and conscientious character of the work displayed in them. We feel that we are dealing with a man who is giving us the fruit of honest labour. Every problem he attacks is fairly considered on every side.'-The Times.

Mr. Giffen is a logical and lucid writer, who impresses his reader with the ease with which he handles the widest and explains the most complicated interests. A morning spent over these essays in an industrious spirit would greatly assist some of our legislators to attain to sounder views of some of our greatest public concerns, and might save the Houses of Parliament some unprofitable expenditure of time.'-Daily News.

GLAISTER (W.) LIFE OF THE EMPEROR KARL THE GREAT [Charlemagne]. Translated from the Contemporary History of Eginhard. With Notes and Chapters on Eginhard, the Franks, Karl, and the Breaking-up of the Empire. With a Map. By the Rev. W. Glaister, M.A., B.C.L., University College, Oxford. Crown 8vo. 4s. 6d.

This is a real addition to our English library of historical works. The translation itself is faithful, yet easy. The notes are, on the whole, scholarly, and illustrate instead of (as sometimes happens) being illustrated by the text. The work is rendered more useful by an ethnographical map proper to the period, and certain very useful genealogical trees.'-Athenæum.

'The book, with Retzsch's fine outlines-makes one of the most beautiful poetical renderings of a foreign poet with which we are acquainted.'-Spectator.

'The re-issue of the outline illustrations to "Faust" will be welcomed by the lovers of the graceful and fanciful in art. . . . . In spite of certain defects and mannerisms, the "Faust designs seem fully entitled to the high place they hold in the history of book illustrations.' -Pall Mall Gazette.

GOMBERT'S FRENCH DRAMA. Re-edited by M. Gasc. 6d. each, sewed; Is. cloth.

This is a selection of the best French Tragedies and Comedies of Molière, Racine, Corneille, and Voltaire, carefully edited, with Arguments in English to each scene, and footnotes explaining the more difficult passages, and translating the idiomatic expressions into the corresponding English idioms.

[blocks in formation]

The student, after using Gasc's French Course, is recommended to turn to these annotated editions of the French Classics, as a good means of continuing his studies. While the interest of the plays is a constant stimulus to further exertion, the student in his reading unconsciously becomes acquainted with much French idiom useful in dialogue.
