and such as were of corrupt tastes honoured him, but still all was gloomy in his soul. Hume got him settled in a comfortable house at Wooton, in Derbyshire; but there was no peace. The most irritating suspicions came across his mind; and the retirement in which he lived, leaving him more time to brood over his past life, seemed only to nourish the dismal fancies of his dark mind. He quarrelled with Hume, and reproached him violently, and then threw himself into his arms, and wept, and was reconciled. Then he quarrelled with him again, and Hume became as enraged and indignant as himself, and he demanded an explanation. And so the quarrel went on, till the parties were irreconcileably alienated from each other.

Rousseau grew worse and worse. His misery increased, and nothing pleased him, and he quarrelled with every one near him. He returned to France, and tried amusements till he was tired; found new friends and quarrelled with them; grew suspicious of every body, and fancied the whole world was against him. His misery still increased, till no one could endure his company, and at length he sought the unbeliever's last and only refuge, and shot himself through the head with a pistol ball. From first to last, Rousseau furnishes an awful illustration of the influence of infidel principles on the character and enjoyments of man. He was a man formed and qualified by God for the greatest and noblest achievements, yet he was brought, by the power of infidel principles, to stain himself with the basest and most unnatural of crimes, and to plunge himself into the deepest andmost hopeless wretchedness. "From being the most sensitive," says one of his biographers, "be became first the most selfish, then the most suspicious, the most ungrateful, and lastly the most unhappy and pitiable of men." Rousseau's principles were the same as those of the English Socialists, only not so fully ripened.

Before I proceed with the character of the French infidel Socialists, I will give a slight exhibition of the fruits of the system nearer home.

A young woman at

*who has for some time past attended the Social institution in that town, absconded with a man that attended the same school of pollution, on Saturday evening five weeks ago, and was not heard of again till the Wednesday following. She had passed the four days and nights in company with the man in the neighbourhood of The girl had been singing at the Socialists' institution, and a collection had been made for her. She was not quite seventeen years old, and such was the distress of her poor mother, at the disgrace and ruin of her daughter, that she was thrown into fits thereby. Did not the mother know before what sort of places Social institutions are, and what sort of lessons young people are there taught?

I was informed of several other young women, not less than nine, who have attended the Social institution, at

who have been disgraced and ruined in a similar way by the Socialists. Several married women also, who have attended the Social institution, I am credibly informed, have given their husbands great offence, and several married men have given as great offence to their wives. The Socialist dancing master, also, is charged with causing great uneasiness in the families of those who place themselves under his instructions; as are also certain of the Socialist lecturers. One of the leaders of the Socialists lived at with an unmarried woman as his wife, until about six weeks ago: at that time he consented to be married to her.

Another, who is a great man among the Socialists at has seduced several young females, and continues to pursue the same course, plotting the ruin of every young woman that comes in his way. He attempted to throw one of his unhappy victims down a rock, and was imprisoned for the deed, but since the expiration of his imprisonment, he continues the same disgraceful and hard-hearted work of ruin as formerly. Since he became a Socialist he appears to be hardened in his course of vice,

and to be seven times more the child of pollution and cruelty than before.

One of the principal officers of the Socialists, one of their greatest and, most influential men, is one of the most abandoned men in existence. He deserted his wife, led astray his wife's sister, and when she was ruined, abandoned her, defrauded an operative trades' union at deceived the people with whom he lodged; but no censure is passed upon his conduct by the Socialists. What sort of people must the Socialists be, when they have such men as these for their leaders ? A pamphlet was published in Manchester lately, containing these awful charges, and yet neither the Editor of the New Moral World, who, according to report, knows all about the matter, nor any of his Socialist friends and followers, attempted to answer it. The pamphlet contained the author's name also, as well as the name of the guilty person, and it also contained extracts of letters from the poor unhappy girl whom he had seduced and ruined. The letters are heart-rending. I saw this pamphlet, and read it myself, and the writer. challenged the whole Socialist body to refute a line of his statements, but none of them could do it. Instead of answering the pamphlet, those very Socialists, who make such an outcry against persecution, served the booksellers with a threatening notice of prosecution if they did not give up selling it. The booksellers obeyed the threat, as the printer's name was not on the pamphlet, and the pamphlet was suppressed. Those unclean deeds are quite common among the Socialists. Most of their leading men that I have heard of, have been guilty of seducing and ruining the women that attend their meetings, both single and married. Several of them live with unmarried women, and have children by them, and it is a common practice, when their victims have children, to leave them, and seek for others. Their leading man at Manchester has changed his partner repeatedly, and has very lately given a new proof of the viciousness of his system, and the filthiness of his character. The whole of the Social

ists' system is a system of licentionsness and profligacy. I have read their works, and the worst and filthiest vices, the most barefaced and universal profligacy imaginable, are advocated. R. Owen's work on marriage pleads for promiscuous intercourse, and prostitution without all limits. Their festivals and dancing parties are schemes for destroying the modesty of females, and throwing down all the barriers that stand in the way of lawless and wholesale sensuality. If I were even to name the awful and obscene doctrines, and the unnatural and horrifying practices which Robert Owen and his son, and his followers inculcate, I should sin against public decency. They teach, and recommend, and practise things which it would be a crime to name.

SCRIPTURE ILLUSTRATED.

To bear, in the Sacred Writings, often signifies to bear away. It is said of Christ, when he had been healing many that were afflicted, and many that were possessed with devils, "Himself took our infirmities, and bore our sicknesses." The meaning is, that he took away our infirmities and bore away our sicknesses. In 1 Peter, ii. 24, it is said of Christ, that "he bore our sins in his own body on the tree.' The meaning is, that by his sufferings on the tree he bore away our sins; that we being dead unto sin, should live unto righteousness.

The employment of Time.-Ah! my brethren, how many of the reprobate, in the midst of their anguish and punishments, intreat from the mercy of God only one of those moments which we know not how to employ ! and, could their request be granted, what use would they not make of that precious moment! How many tears of compunction and penitence! How many prayers, and supplications, to soften the Father of mercies, and to induce his paternal feelings to restore to them his affection! This only moment is nevertheless refused. Time, they are told, exists no more for them: and you find yourselves embarrassed with the little you have left. God will judge you, my brethren; and on the bed of death, and in that terrible hour which shall surprise you, in vain shall you demand a little more time; in vain shall

you promise to God a more Christian use of what you will endeavour to obtain: his justice, without pity, will cut the thread of your days; and that time, which now oppresses and embarrasses you, shall then be denied.-Massilon.

Force of Example.-The poor woman who, with a scanty ward. robe, is ever neat and clean in her person,-amidst various and trying duties, is patient, gentle, and affectionate in her domestic relations, with small funds is economical and judicious in her household management, as presenting every day a practical exposition of some of the best lessons in life, may be a greater benefactress of her kind than the woman of fortune, though she scatter a tithe of a large fortune in alms. The poor man, whose regularity and sobriety of conduct co-operate with such a woman, and show his fellow-workmen, or townsmen, what temperance, industry, manly tenderness, and superiority to low and sensual temptation, can effect in endearing a home which, like the green spot that the traveller finds in the desert, is bright even amid the gloom of poverty, and sweet even amid all the surrounding bit terness-such a man does good as well as the most eloquent writer that ever wrote. If there were a few patriarchs of the people, women as well as men, (if I may be excused for admitting the former to a patriarchy) their influence would soon be sensibly felt.--Mrs. Leman Grimstone.

REPORT OF THE DISCUSSION.

Lloyd Jones has once more stopped the printing of the Discussion, in direct contradiction to his four-fold engagement, and in opposition to the decision both of the reporter and of the committee, and to the appointment of his own friends. There is now no probability that a correct and authorized report of the Discussion will be published. The committee might insist on its publication, but my friends have already spent so much time about it, and they are so tired and disgusted with the deceitful and unprincipled conduct of the Socialists, and especially of Lloyd Jones, that they are unwilling to have anything more to do with them. I have, myself, done every thing I could to secure a speedy publication of the report, but all to no purpose. I submitted my corrections to the reporter, but though this was Lloyd Jones's proposal, he set the reporter's decision at nought. I submited the matter to the committee; their decision was that Lloyd Jones's objections were frivolous; and Lloyd Jones himself agreed to let the printing go on. And yet, in a day or so after, he sets the decision of his friends aside, breaks his own engagement again, and stops the printer once more. I have offered to submit the matter to the judgment of a new committee, or to the judgment of the old
