The Syndicate shall publish annually, in the month of January, a list of places at which examinations shall be held. 34. Applications for admission to the Matriculation Examination must reach the Registrar not later than the 1st October preceding, and Candidates must, at the same time, notify the optional language in which they elect to be examined. 35. No Candidate shall be registered unless he have previously paid a fee of Ten Rupees. Candidates failing to pass a Matriculation Examination may be admitted to subsequent examinations on payment of a like fee of ten Rupees on each occasion, 36. The Matriculation Examination shall be conducted by means of printed papers, which shall be the same for all Candidates, and shall be given out to them on the same days and hours at each place of examination. 37. Candidates for the Matriculation Examination shall be examined in the following branches of knowledge i. ENGLISH LANGUAGE, in which each Candidate must undergo examination. ií. OPTIONAL LANGUAGE. One of the following languages at the option of the Can (a.) Arithmetic. The first four Rules, Reduction, Valand Decimal Fractions, Proportion, Practice, Extraction of the Square Root, Interest. gar * In the Déva Nágari character only. (b.) Algebra.-Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Involution and Evolution of Algebraical Quantities, and Simple Equations with Easy Problems. (c.) Geometry.-The first three books of Euclid with easy deductions. iv. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE. (a.) The leading facts of the History of India. (b.) General Geography, and the Geography of India in particular. (c.) Physical Geography-Prof. Geikie's Physical Geography (Science Primer Series.) (d.) Elements of Physics-Prof. Balfour Stewart's Physics (Science Primer Series), first 67 paragraphs. 38. There shall be two papers of questions in the English language, one of which shall bear exclusively upon the selected text-books, and the other contain a piece or pieces for paraphrase not selected from the text-books and questions on the language generally. In the second language there shall also be two papers, of which one shall contain questions on the text-books, and on the Grammar, structure, and idiom of the language, while the other shall consist wholly of passages for translation from English into the second language and from the second language into English, with the addition, in the case of Vernacular languages, of original composition. The passage for translation from English into the Vernacular shall be the same for all languages. The passages for translation from the second language into English shall consist partly of extracts from the text-books and partly of extracts of somewhat less difficulty from other authors. 39. The questions in each subject shall not be more in respect of number or of difficulty than can be answered within the allowed time by a Candidate of decided ability well prepared in the subject. 40. The Matriculation Examination shall be conducted in the order of time and subjects set forth in the following table, and the number of marks assignable to each subject shall be as herein specified : 41. At the close of each day's examination the answers of the Candidates shall be sealed up by the officer appointed to superintend the examination, and transmitted immedi ately to the Registrar, who shall forward them directly to the Examiners. 42. The Examiners shall be appointed not less than three months before the time fixed for the Examination, in order that they may have ample time for exercising care and deliberation in the preparation of their papers. 43. Previous to the transmission of the examination papers to the Registrar, each Examiner shall submit his paper, together with the marks he intends to assign to each question, to his colleagues in the same subject for remarks and suggestions, the adoption of which, however, shall be left to his own discretion. 44. On or before a day to be fixed from time to time by the Syndicate, each Examiner shall prepare a list of the marks awarded by him to each Candidate in each paper or portion of a paper set by him, and shall forward the same to the Registrar or to the gentleman appointed by the Syndi cate to assist the Registrar in the Tabulation of the results. The Tabulator shall thereupon draw up a statement in the annexed form and submit it to the Syndicate through the Registrar. 45. The Candidates shall be ranked in the order of proficiency as determined by the total marks obtained by each, and shall be arranged in two classes— The 1st, consisting of those who have obtained not less than one-half of the aggregate number of marks. The 2nd, of those who have obtained not less than onethird of the aggregate number of marks. Candidates failing to obtain one-third of the marks in English, one-fourth in each of the other branches, or one, third upon the whole, shall not pass. The Tabulator shall be at liberty to bracket men, when the difference between them amounts only to a very small number of marks. Form of Statement to be submitted by the Tabulator. A certificate signed by the Registrar shall be given to each passed Candidate, setting forth the date of the examination, the optional language in which he was examined, and the class in which he was placed. II.-FIRST EXAMINATION IN ARTS. 47. The First Examination in Arts shall be held in Madras once a year, commencing on the 15th day of December, unless that day falls on a Sunday, in which case it shall be held on the Monday following. Candidates for this examination must have completed two years from the time of passing the Matriculation Examination either in this or some other Indian University. 49. Applications for admission to this examination must reach the Registrar not later than the 1st October. Each Candidate not specially exempted by the Syndicate from so doing must forward with his application his Matriculation certificate and a certificate from the Head of some College or school authorized in that behalf by the Governor of Fort St. George in Council to the effect that he has studied the subjects prescribed for this examination and has attended an authorized institution or institutions for a period of at least eighteen months since passing the Matriculation Examination. The optional language in which the Candidate elects to be examined must also be specified.* 50. No Candidate shall be registered unless he have previously paid a fee of Twenty Rupees. Candidates failing to pass one examination may be admitted to subsequent examinations on payment of a like fee of twenty Rupees on each occasion. 51.
