3 Jesus is the Prince of Peace,
Now let strife and anger cease;
Earth and heaven unite to sing
Glory unto Christ our King.

179.

P. M.

1 ESUS we will acknowledge,

JESUS

Who burst our bonds in sunder; And loudly sing,

Our conquering King,

In songs of joy and wonder.

2 He fights his people's battles,
Omnipotently glorious,
He fights alone,

And makes his own

O'er earth and hell victorious.
3 Lord, with the church triumphant,
The church on earth adore thee;
Saints shall remove

To realms above,

And cast their crowns before thee. 4 Honour, and power, and blessing, Be to the Saviour given;

180.

By all who know

His name below,

And by the church in heaven.

S. M.

1AWAKE, and sing the song

Of Moses and the Lamb!

Wake every heart, and every tongue,
To praise the Saviour's name!

2 Sing of his dying love,

Sing of his rising power;

Sing how he intercedes above
For us whose sins he bore.

3 Sing on your heavenly way,
Ye ransom'd pilgrims, sing;
Sing on, rejoicing every day

In Christ, the' eternal King!
4 Soon shall we hear him say,
"Ye blessed children, come!"
Soon will he call us hence away,
To our eternal home.

5 There shall each raptured tongue
His endless praise proclaim;
And sweeter voices swell the song
Of Moses and the Lamb!

P. M.

THE Lord is our salvation,

A present help in need;

From terror's desolation

His saints are surely freed.

We will not fear, though quakes the world, And fall her mountain-pillars strong; Though roars the sea, and hills are hurl'd Its swelling tide along.

2 There is a gentle river,

Its margin I have trod,

Whose streams make glad for ever

The city of our God.

It murmurs near the holy place

Where he, the Highest, hath his shrine;

And tells me his almighty grace

Is Zion's strength, and mine.

[blocks in formation]

OUR Father sits on yonder throne

Amidst the hosts above;

He reigns throughout the world alone,
He reigns the God of love.

2 He knew us when we knew him not;
Was with us, though unseen;
His favours come to us unsought;
His love has wondrous been.
3 He keeps us now, securely keeps,
Whatever foe assails,

With vigilance that never sleeps,
With power that never fails.
4 He gives us hope that we shall be
Ere long with him above;
That we shall all his glory see,

And celebrate his love.

5 Then let us, while we dwell below,
Obey our Father's voice:

To all that he commands we bow,
And in his name rejoice.

6 How sweet to hear him say at last,
"Ye blessed children, come;

The days of banishment are past,
And heaven is your home!"

[blocks in formation]

Awake! for thy foes shall oppress thee no Bright o'er thy hills dawns the day-star of gladness:

Arise, for the night of thy sorrow is o'er. Daughter of Zion! awake from thy sadness!

Awake! for thy foes shall oppress thee no

more.

2 Strong were thy foes; but the arm that sub

dued them,

[far: And scatter'd their legions, was mightier Fleeing like chaff from the scourge that

pursued them,

[of war.

In vain were their steeds, and their chariots
Daughter of Zion! &c.

3 Daughter of Zion! the power that hath saved thee, [should be. Extoll'd with the harp and the timbrel Shout! for the foe is destroy'd that enslaved

thee,

[free.

The' oppressor is vanquish'd, and Zion is
Daughter of Zion! &c.

SECTION XIII.

JUDGMENT AND ETERNITY.

P. M.

GREAT God! what do I see and hear?

The end of things created!

The Judge of mankind does appear,
On clouds of glory seated!

The trumpet sounds, the graves restore
The dead which they contain'd before:
Prepare, my soul, to meet him!
2 The dead in Christ shall first arise,
At the last trumpet's sounding;
Caught up to meet him in the skies,

With joy their Lord surrounding :
No guilty fears their souls dismay;
His presence sheds eternal day
On those prepared to meet him.

1

C. M.

THERE is a glorious world of light,

Above the starry sky,

Where saints departed, clothed in white,
Adore the Lord most high.

2 But, hark! amid the joyful songs

Those happy voices raise,

Ten thousand thousand infant tongues
Unite with perfect praise.

1

3 Soon must our earthly course be run,
Our mortal frames decay;
Parents and children, one by one,
Must fade, and pass away.

4 Great God, impress the solemn thought This day on every breast,

That both the teachers and the taught
May gain thy heavenly rest.

TEN

P. M.

EN thousand times ten thousand sung
Their anthems round the throne,

When, lo! one solitary tongue

Began a song unknown;

A song unknown to angels' ears,
A song that spoke of banish'd fears,
Of pardon'd sins, of dried up tears.
2 Not one of all that heavenly host
Could such high notes attain;
But spirits from a distant coast
United in the strain :

Till he who first began the song,
To sing alone not suffer'd long,
Was mingled in a countless throng.
3 And still as hours are fleeting by,
The angels ever bear

Some newly-ransom❜d soul on high,
To join the chorus there.

And still the song will louder grow,
Till all the saved by Christ below
To that fair world of rapture go.
4 O, give me, Lord, my golden harp,
And tune my broken voice,
That I may sing of troubles sharp,
Exchanged for endless joys:

The song that ne'er was heard before
A sinner reach'd the heavenly shore,
Shall now be sung for evermore!
