IT has been the object of the compiler to embrace the greatest amount of matter relating to this State, in the smallest space. The type though small, is distinct and beautiful; and the arrangement such that particular names and subjects may easily be found.

The following are some peculiarities of the Register for 1848. The calendar pages are filled with notices of the times of holding the Courts; Annual Meetings of Banks, Insurance Companies, Ecclesiastical bodies, &c.; Commencements of Colleges; Annual Elections, and times of the meetings of the Legislatures of the States; Days observed by the Episcopal church; Time of the Sun's southing, &c.

The historical department embraces the original Constitution of Connecticut, of 1639; a complete list of Assistants, or members

of the Upper House, from 1639 to 1819, with their places of residence; and the original Democratic Powers of Towns.

The politics, ages and occupations of the Executive Officers and Members of the Legislature are given.

The Attorneys at Law are included under the several counties, and placed first on the lists of Justices of the Peace in the several Towns.

The Towns of the State are all arranged alphabetically; and the Cities and Boroughs immediately follow the respective towns in which they are included. Besides more complete lists of town, city and borough officers, we have inserted the School Society Clerks and Treasurers, and acting School Visitors, which will be more complete another year.

The Militia returns are as complete as it is practicable to make them.

The date of the entrance of each Member of Congress into the House is specified.

It is the intention of the publishers to continue the Register; and from year to year, insert matter of permanent value; which will make it desirable for purchasers to have a complete file. The publishers can still supply the Register of 1847.

The Register for 1847 contained,-Annals of Connecticut from 1620 to 1821: The Patent of 1631: and the Charter of 1662: Lists of Governors, Deputy or Lieutenant Governors, Secretaries of State, Treasurers, and Comptrollers from 1639 to 1846: A complete history of the organization of Probate Courts: and Historical sketches of towns; the original Indian names, times of settlement and incorporation, &c.

All officers, institutions, &c., which change from year to year, will be annually inserted: others of a more permanent form will be occasionally given. For this reason, officers of some of the literary and benevolent institutions, &c., given in the Register of 1847, are not repeated in this.

Our thanks are due to Town Clerks and others, who have furnished materials to perfect the Register. Some of the returns are so illegible, that it is impossible to avoid some errors in Proper names. We must request particular attention to this subject in future.

COMMITTEE ON NORMAL SCHOOLS.

TO REPORT TO THE NEXT LEGISLATURE. Messrs. John T. Norton, Farmington; William H. Russell, New Haven; Charles W. Rockwell, Norwich; Rev. E. Hall, Norwalk; Thomas Backus, Killingly; Albert N. Baldwin, Litchfield Co.; Dr. Charles Woodward, Middletown; Loren P. Waldo, Tolland.
