D-Withheld to avoid disclosing figures for individual companies.
N.A. Not available.

The SIC (4 digit) industry descriptions used in this report are based on the classification system used through 1957 and will differ from those appearing in the 1958 Census of Manufactures reports, series MC-20 through MC-39. For a description of the industries in this report, see the appropriate 1954 Census of Manufactures industry report or the 1958 Census of Manufactures preliminary reports MC(P)-20 through MC(P)-39.

The determination of company affiliation of establishments is based on census reports and publicly available records. Value of shipment totals for establishments have been summarized into company totals in each manufacturing industry. "Largest" companies are determined by each company's value of shipments in the specified industry.

Includes, for all manufacturing establishments classified in the industry, not only (a) their value of products"primary" to the industry, but also (b) their value of "secondary" products, which are primary to other industries, and (c) their "miscellaneous receipts" such as receipts for contract and commission work on materials owned by others, scrap and salable refuse, repair, etc. Excludes sales of products bought

and resold in the same condition. The 1954 and 1947 figures for some industries reflect minor revisions of previously published census data.

The percentages consist of the sum of the value of shipments of the largest 4 companies (or 8, 20, or 50 companies), divided by the total value of shipments of the industry.

The "primary product specialization ratío" measures the extent to which plants classified in the industry specialize in making products regarded as primary to the industry; that is, value of shipments of primary products of plants in the industry is expressed as a ratio of the total shipments of all products made by these establishments (excluding miscellaneous receipts, such as receipts for contract and commission work on materials owned by others, scrap and salable refuse, repair, etc.). The 1954 and 1947 ratios for some industries reflect minor revisions of previously published census data.

The "coverage ratio" measures the extent to which all shipments of primary products of an industry are made by plants classified in the industry, as distinguished from secondary producers elsewhere; that is, value of shipments of the primary products made by plants classified in the industry is expressed as a ratio of the total shipments of primary products made by all producers, both in and out of the specified industry. The 1954 and 1947 ratios for some industries reflect minor revisions of previously published census data.

Value added by manufacture is shown for this industry rather than value of shipments because the latter contains a substantial and unmeasurable amount of duplication. The calculations for the 4, 8, 20, and 50 largest companies also are based on value added.

Primary product specialization index and coverage index are based on the combined figures for Industry 2011, Meat Packing plants, and Industry 2013, Prepared Meats.

Includes information for Industry 2014, Sausage Casings.

10 Comparable data are not available because of significant changes in the 1947 classification of plants or products in this industry.

11 Establishments shipping milk and other dairy products are classified according to their primary product. 12 In 1954, Industry 2027, Fluid Milk, was composed of 2 industries, 2026, Fluid Milk (only), and 2027, Fluid Milk and Other Products. 1954 figures on value of shipments and share of value of shipments accounted for by the 4 and 8 largest companies have been recalculated on a basis comparable to 1958. In 1947 and earlier years, establishments primarily distributing fiuid milk were classified as nonmanufacturing. 13 Value of production shown for this industry rather than value of shipments. Includes value of primary and secondary products made and miscellaneous receipts such as receipts for contract and commission work on materials owned by others, scrap, and other salable refuse.

14 1958 and 1954 data for Industry 2036 are not completely comparable and 1947 data for industries 2036 and 2037 are not available. In 1947 Industry 2036, Packaged Seafood, was in part (frozen packaged seafood) included with Industry 2037, Frozen Fruits, Vegetables, and Fish, and in part (fresh packaged seafood) included in nonmanufacturing industries (principally 5046, Fish and Seafoods). A significant but undetermined number of establishments included in Industry 2036 in 1958 were probably included in Industry 5046 in 1954.

15 Products in Industry 2045, Flour Mixes, are also considered primary to Industry 2041, Flour and Meal. 16 Bonded storerooms which were engaged in blending wines were included in 1958 and 1954 but excluded in 1947.

17 Ratios not meaningful because total value of primary products shipped include a significant amount of duplication.

18 Jobbers were included in 1947 but excluded in 1954 and 1958.

19 Data for value of shipments are not comparable to 1958. Prior to 1958, plants finishing their own materials (fabric, yarn, etc.) were requested to delete the value of the unfinished products from both their cost of materials and their value of shipments. Thus, all establishments in the industry reported on a com. parable basis (i.e., as commission plants). Beginning in 1958, plants finishing their own materials included the value of the gray fabrics or unfinished materials in their cost of materials and reported the actual value of final products shipped.

20 Includes data for Industry 2225, Yarn Mills, Silk System.

21 Specialization and coverage ratios not meaningful because of predominance of receipts for contract and commission work on materials owned by others.

22 Jobbers were included in manufacturing in 1958 and 1954 but excluded in 1947.

23 Industry 2395 reports value of receipts.

24 The 1958 concentration ratios for this industry are not comparable to those published for earlier years. In the 1958 Census of Manufactures integrated pulp and paper companies were given the option of reporting their pulp and paper (or board) operations on a combined basis when both were conducted at a single physical location. Most integrated companies exercised this option and filed a single report covering their pulp, paper (or board) making operations at a single physical location, but a few with departmental accounting chose to report separately for the pulp mill and paper (or board) mill, as they were required to do in 1954 and 1947. The only other pulp mills separately reported in the 1958 Census of Manufactures were (1) those exclusively selling their pulp on the market (i.e., not associated or affiliated with a paper and board mill), and (2) those pulp mills affiliated or associated with paper or board mills but operated at a different physical location from the paper or board mill(s). This change also affected the comparability of the 1958 figures on employment and value added for industries 2612, Paper and Paperboard Mills, and 2613, Building Paper and Board Mills. However, the change had little effect on comparability of value of shipments for these 2 industries.

25 No comparable data are available. In 1947, Industry 2613, Building Paper and Board Mills, was combined with Industry 2612, Paper and Board Mills.

25 Separate figures not available. In 1947, Industry 2811, Sulfuric Acid, was combined with Industry 2819, Inorganic Chemicals, not elsewhere classified.

27 Government plants that are privately operated are included in this industry.

28 Comparable data not available. In 1947, Industry 2829, Organic Chemicals, not elsewhere classified, included Industry 2822, Intermediates and Organic Colors.

29 Includes data for 1947 Industries 2832, Botanical Products, and 2833, Medicinal Chemicals. These industries were shown separately in 1947.

30 Fire distillers of gum naval stores were excluded in 1947 but included in 1954.

31 The discrepancy between these figures and those appearing in table 1 of the 1958 Census of Manufac tures Bull. MC-20A, Fats and Oils (82 companies and $994,865,000 value of shipments) is due to a misclassi

fication of 16 small companies into Industry 2883. These companies should have been classified into Industry 2092, Shortening and Cooking Oils. (See footnotes to table 4 of Bull. MC-20H.)

Separate information not available. For 1958, Industries 2931, Beehive Coke Ovens; 2932, Byproduct Coke Ovens; 3311, Blast Furnaces; and 3312, Steelworks and Rolling Mills were combined into a single Industry, 3312, Blast Furnaces and Steel Mills.

Includes data for Industry 2991, Fuel Briquets and Packaged Fuels, and Industry 2999, Petroleum and Coal Products, not elsewhere classified. These industries were shown separately in 1947.

34 Figures for 1954 not completely comparable to those for 1958 and 1947. Establishments primarily engaged in producing factory rebuilt and retreaded tires were included in this industry in 1954 but included in the service trades in 1958 and 1947.

Ready-mixed concrete is included in the Census of Manufactures for the 1st time in 1958. No comparable information is available for earlier years.

Revised percentages not available.

Industry 3312, Blast Furnaces and Steel Mills, has been redefined since 1954 to include Industry 3311, Blast Furnaces; Industry 3312, Steelworks and Rolling Mills; Industry 2931, Beehive Coke Ovens; and Industry 2932, Byproduct Coke Ovens. 1954 and 1947 value of shipments and shares accounted for by the largest 4, 8, and 20 companies have been recomputed on a basis comparable to 1958.

Industry 3321, Gray-iron Foundries, includes, in addition to commercial (jobbing) foundries, "captive" foundries at separate locations producing gray-iron castings for other plants of the same company. Accordingly, the ratios for this industry do not reflect the market shares in the commercial foundry industry as such.

Comparable data are not available due to significant revisions in the 1954 classification of plants or products in this industry.

48 A number of small establishments were misclassified into Industry 3411 which should have been tabulated with data for other industries. This affects the figure for the number of companies but has no appreciable effect on the total value of shipments or the percentage of value of shipments accounted for by the largest companies.

41 Not completely comparable to previous years. Some enameling and lacquering operations which were reported as integrated operations within finished product plants in 1954 were reported as separate establishments in Industry 3465 for 1958.

42 No comparable data are available. The 1947 Industry 3543, Cutting Tools, was split into 2 industries for 1954 (Industry 3544, Special Dies and Tools, and Industry 3545, Metalworking Machine Attachments). 43 In 1947, Industry 3594, Industrial Patterns and Molds, was combined with Industry 3559, Special-industry Machinery, not elsewhere classified. Separate figures were tabulated for each industry in 1954. 4 Actual index is between figure shown and 1.00.

Figures for 1958 are not completely comparable to 1954 and 1947 because of changes in the standard industrial classification system, which made selected industrial electrical control equipment (see 1954 product class 36162) primary to SIC 3611 in 1958, rather than to SIC 3616 as in 1954. This change had a minor but unmeasurable effect on industry classification.

Comparable figures not available. Ratios were calculated on "value of shipments" in earlier years. 1954 ratios for the largest 4 and 8 companies have been recalculated based on "value added."

47 In 1958 approximately 50 small companies were misclassified into Industry 3721, Aircraft, because of incomplete reporting of product information. Although this misclassification significantly affected the number of companies, it had only an insignificant effect on the value added and employment in the industry and on the share of value added accounted for by the 4, 8, and 20 largest companies.

Not completely comparable to 1958 because of change in the standard industrial classification system. In 1958 an establishment manufacturing complete aircraft was classified in Industry 3721, Aircraft, if its value of work done on aircraft exceeded its value of shipments of any other single industry's products. In 1954 any establishment manufacturing at least 1 complete aircraft was classified in Industry 3721. This has resulted in substantial changes in both the specialization and coverage ratios between 1958 and 1954.

Ratios are not meaningful because total value of primary products shipped by the industry does not reflect receipts for large expenditures made by the establishments during the year for research, design, and development work.

* Value of work done rather than value of shipments. Includes miscellaneous receipts such as receipts for contract work and commission work on materials owned by others, scrap, salable refuse, repair work, etc. Ratios not meaningful because of large proportion of miscellaneous receipts relative to total value of shipments.

Although the ranking in this table is based on value of shipments, such data for this industry are not published by the Census Bureau because of substantial and unmeasurable duplication. Concentration ratios are computed on the basis of value added by manufacture as shown in other tables.

•Revised.
