THE

CHAPEL HYMNAL

WITH TUNES.

COMPILED BY S. LASAR.

New York and Chicago:

PUBLISHED BY BIGLOW & MAIN.

PREFACE.

THE

HE CHAPEL HYMNAL is presented for the consideration and use of the public as an expression of that order of Hymns and Tunes which, in the judgment of the Compiler, may be profitably used in public Worship. It is certainly beyond question that, where the most lofty themes of religious truth are introduced in the forms of Hymns, there should be appropriateness in the sound measures, which carry to the ear Divine and Holy Words. It has been the distinct effort of the Editor to prepare for the CHAPEL HYMNAL, a collection of Tunes worthy of their sacred use. To this end he has not hesitated to omit whatever Tunes appeared to fall below that standard of worth, and to introduce from the most renowned ecclesiastical composers such material as will truly assist the Worship, and uplift the taste of the people, both the old and the young.

The Compiler completes his labors upon the CHAPEL HYMNAL with the consciousness that, whatever their ultimate success, their inspiration has been a pure and single aim to dignify and to adorn the occasions for the Worship of Almighty God in Sunday Schools, Seminaries, Colleges, and other Assemblies gathered for His Praise.
