[A manuscript circulated by Essex's friends in 1598. was not printed till 1604. The handwriting of the title (as given above) is almost certainly Francis Bacon's; moreover, the manuscript contained corrections and additions in the same hand. It occupied 24pp. closely written. The catalogue contained a long historical note referring to the circumstances under which this apology was written.-ED.] 5085 Bacon (Francis). It is worthy of notice that Mearne's name appears on the title as publisher of the volume, a combination of the rarest occurrence.
