Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run and be glorified, even as also it is with

Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after 7 the tradition which they received of us. For your- ancient selves know how ye ought to imitate us: for we be- authorities 8 haved not ourselves disorderly among you; neither did read ye. we eat bread for nought at any man's hand, but in labour and travail, working night and day, that we might 9 not burden any of you: not because we have not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, 10 that ye should imitate us. For even when we were

with you, this we commanded you, If any will not 11 work, neither let him eat. For we hear of some that walk among you disorderly, that work not at all, but 12 are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that with quiet13 ness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, 14 brethren, be not weary in well-doing. And if any

man obeyeth not our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end 15 that he may be ashamed. And yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

TIMOTHY.

PAUL, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the 1 commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope; unto Timothy, my true child in faith: 2 Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ

Jesus our Lord.

As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was 3 going into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine, neither to 4 give heed to fables and endless genealogies, the which minister questionings, rather than a 'dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now. But the end of 5 the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned: from which things some 6 2 Gr. missed having swerved have turned aside unto vain talking;

fidently affirm. But we know that the law is good, if 8
a man use it lawfully, as knowing this, that law is not 9
made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and
unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy
and profane, for 3 murderers of fathers and murderers
of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for abusers 10
of themselves with men, for men-stealers, for liars, for
false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary
to the sound 5 doctrine; according to the gospel of the 11
glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my
trust.

I thank him that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our 12 authorities Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service; though I was before a blasphemer, and 13 a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace 14

Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into 16 the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief: howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ shew forth all his longsuffering, for an ensample of them which should hereafter 17 believe on him unto eternal life. This is good and acceptable in the sight 4 of God our Saviour; who willeth that all men should

be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, one mediator also between God 6 and men, himself man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself

2 Faithful is the saying, If a man seeketh the office 3 of a bishop, he desireth a good work. The bishop 2 Faithful is therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, soberminded, orderly, given to preceding hospitality, apt to teach; no brawler, no striker; but 3 gentle, not contentious, no lover of money; one that 4 ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (but if a man knoweth not 5 how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) not a novice, lest being puffed up 6 5 Gr. judge- he fall into the 5 condemnation of the devil. Moreover 7 he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Deacons in like manner must be grave, not 8 doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure 9 conscience. And let these also first be proved; then 10 let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless. Women in like manner must be grave, not slanderers, 11 temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be hus- 12 bands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. And exercise thyself 8 unto godliness: for bodily exercise is profitable for a or, for little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is 9 to come. Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all 10 acceptation. For to this end we labour and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of them that 11, 12 believe. These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, 13 in faith, in purity. Till I come, give heed to reading, 14 to exhortation, to teaching. Neglect not the gift that

is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the 1 laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Be diligent in these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy 16 progress may be manifest unto all. Take heed to thy

self, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee.

But if any widow hath children or grandchildren, let them learn first to shew piety towards their own family, and to requite their parents for this is acceptable in the sight of God. 5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, hath her hope set on God, and continueth in supplications 6 and prayers night and day. But she that giveth her
