OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS.

AN ACT declaring what Laws are in force in this State.

APPROVED, February 4, 1819.

[SECT. 1.] Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in the general assembly, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the common law of England, all statutes or acts of the British Parliament made in aid of the common law prior to the fourth year of the reign of King James the I. excepting the second section of the sixth chapter of XLIII. Elizabeth; the eighth chapter XIII. Elizabeth, and ninth chapter XXXVII. Henry VIII. and which are of a general nature and not local to that Kingdom, shall be the rule of decision, and shall be considered as of full force, until repealed by legislative authority.

AN ACT making promissory notes, bonds, bills and vvritings obligatory, negotiable.

APPROVED, February 6, 1819.

[SECT. 1.] Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois; represented in the general assembly, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That all notes in writing, bonds, bills, and writings obligatory, that shall hereafter be made and signed by any person or persons, body politic or corporate, whereby such person or persons, body politic or corporate, promise to pay any sum of money, or specific article of property, or acknowledge any sum of money or specific article of property to be due to any other person or persons, shall be taken to be due and payable, and the sum of money or specific article of property therein mentioned, shall, by virtue thereof, be due. and payable to the person or persons to whom the said note,
