TOM'S PRAYER

BY ADELBERT CLARK

Hark! across the silent valley
Shadows of the twilight creep,
And I hear my baby praying:
"Now I lay me down to sleep."
And I peep between the curtains
And I see at mother's knee,
Little Tom in snowy "nightie”—
Baby Tom, just turning three.

Mother's face is sweet and reverent
As she holds his little hands,
While outside the fire-flies glitter
Dancing o'er the moonlit lands.
And my soul is also bowing

As I watch them there alone, Tom and mother both in prayer— What but that, can e'er atone?

One bright star is set in heaven,
And the world retires to rest;
Little Tom is sweetly sleeping
Leaning on his mother's breast.
Ah, that dear and holy picture

Bows my softened heart to weep,—

Tiny Tom, my baby, praying!
"Now I lay me down to sleep."
