And daily shall He be praised.

M. And there shall be a handful of corn in the earth upon

the top of the mountains;

C. The fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon:

P. And they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

All. His name shall endure for ever:

His name shall be continued as long as the sun :

And men shall be blessed in Him:

All nations shall call Him Blessed.

M. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
Who only doeth wondrous things.

P. And blessed be his glorious name for ever:
C. And let the whole earth be filled with his glory.
All. Amen and amen.

*Hosanna.

Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord!

Blessed be the kingdom of our father David,

That cometh in the name of the Lord:

Hosanna in the highest.

†Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:

A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

IX. NATIONAL SINS.

M. Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth;
For the Lord hath spoken,

I have nourished and brought up children,
And they have rebelled against me.

C. The ox knoweth his owner,

* Mark xi. 9, 10.

+ Hebrews i. 8.

Isaiah i. 2-20.

And the ass his master's crib:

But Israel doth not know,

My people doth not consider.

All. Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity,
A seed of evil-doers, children that are corrupters !
They have forsaken the Lord,

They have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger,
They are gone away backward.

M. Why should ye be stricken any more?

Ye will revolt more and more:

P. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

M. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is

no soundness in it;

But wounds and bruises and putrifying sores :

P. They have not been closed, neither bound up,

Neither mollified with ointment.

M. Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with

fire;

Your land, strangers devour it in your presence,

And it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

C. And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard,

As a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

All. Except the Lord of Hosts had left unto us a very

small remnant,

We should have been as Sodom,

And we should have been like unto Gomorrah!

M. Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; Give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah :

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord:

I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts;

E

And I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs,

or of he-goats.

When ye come to appear before me,

Who hath required this at your hand,
To tread my courts?

Bring no more vain oblations;

Incense is an abomination unto me;

The new-moons and sabbaths,

The calling of assemblies, I cannot away with;

It is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.

Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth :

They are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. And when ye spread forth your hands,

I will hide my eyes from you;

Yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear :
Your hands are full of blood.

Wash you, make you clean;

Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; Cease to do evil; learn to do well;

Seek judgment; relieve the oppressed;

Judge the fatherless; plead for the widow.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord : Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white

as snow;

Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient,

Ye shall eat the good of the land;

But if ye refuse and rebel,

Ye shall be devoured with the sword:

All. For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

M. *Therefore also now, saith the Lord,

Turn ye even to me with all your heart,

And with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.

+ Joel ii. 12-19.

And rend your heart, and not your garments,
And turn unto the Lord your God:
For He is gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness,
And repenteth Him of the evil.

P. Who knoweth if he will return and repent,

And leave a blessing behind him,

C. Even a meat-offering and a drink-offering unto the Lord your God?

M. Blow the trumpet in Zion,

Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly;
P. Gather the people, sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders, gather the children,
And those that suck the breasts;

Let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber,
And the bride out of her closet:

C. Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord,
Weep between the porch and the altar,
And let them say,

M. Spare thy people, O Lord,

And give not thine heritage to reproach,

That the heathen should rule over them;
Wherefore should they say among the people,
Where is their God?

All. Then will the Lord be jealous for his land,
And pity his people;

Yea, the Lord will answer.

M. *And I set my face unto the Lord God,
To seek by prayer and supplications,
With fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
P. And I prayed unto the Lord, my God,
And made my confession, and said,
All. O Lord, the great and dreadful God,

Keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love Him,

*Daniel ix. 3-19.

And to them that keep his commandments:

We have sinned, and have committed iniquity,
And have done wickedly, and have rebelled,

Even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets,

Who spake in thy name to our kings, our princes,
And our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto Thee,
But unto us confusion of faces, as at this day;

To the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

And unto all Israel, that are near and that are far off, Through all the countries whither Thou hast driven them,

Because of their trespass that they have trespassed against Thee.

O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face,

To our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers,

Because we have sinned against Thee.

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness es, Though we have rebelled against Him;

Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, To walk in his laws,

Which He set before us by his servants the prophets. Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law,

Even by departing,

That they might not obey thy voice;

Therefore the curse is poured upon us,

And the oath that is written in the law of Moses,

The servant of God, because we have sinned against

Him;

And He hath confirmed his words,

Which He spake against us,
