XXXIII. THE SABBATH.

M. Awake! awake! my soul awake!
P. Begin this sacred day with praise.

C. And all its hours employ in holy thought

And holy deed.

All. Awake! awake! my soul awake!

Begin this sacred day with praise,

And all its hours employ in holy thought

And holy deed.

M. Blessed be the everlasting God, the Great Creator! Who, though fainting not, nor weary,

Did on the seventh day from his world-building cease,
To teach us mortals how and when to rest.

P. Blessed be the God of Israel-Jehovah !
Who to his redeemed from Egypt's scourge
Did grant Sabbatic laws and peace.

C. Blessed be the Son of Man, the Sabbath's Lord!
Who, in his benign sojourn on earth,

Did teach the Sabbath to observe

In spirit, not in letter, and works of mercy And necessity to do, as well as pray and praise. All. Blessed be the everlasting God, the Great Creator! Who, though fainting not, nor weary,

Did on the seventh day from his world-building cease,

To teach us when and how to rest.

Blessed be the God of Israel-Jehovah!

Who to his redeemed from Egypt's scourge

Did grant Sabbatic laws and peace.

Blessed be the Son of Man, the Sabbath's Lord!

Who, in his benign sojourn on earth,

Did teach us the Sabbath to observe

In spirit, not in letter, and works of mercy
And necessity to do, as well as pray and praise.
M. For this day of rest my God I praise.
P. For this hallowed and unworldly scene
My soul doth praise Thee.

C. For thy Word, thy Message, and thy Gospel,
For instructions my young heart to save,
For thy most tender voice to me,

I sound aloud thy praise.

All. For this day of rest our God we praise.
For this hallowed and unworldly scene
Our souls do praise Thee.

For thy Word, thy Message, and thy Gospel,
For instruction our vile hearts to save,

For thy most tender voice to us,

We sound aloud thy praise.

M. O Lord, Thou makest our toil to cease,

Lest we should worldly be.

P. O Lord, Thou teachest us to care for our souls

As well as our bodies.

C. O Lord, Thou invitest us to spiritual enjoyments—

To pleasures exquisite and refreshing.

All. O Lord, Thou makest our toil to cease,

Lest we should worldly be.

O Lord, Thou teachest us to care for our souls

As well as our bodies.

O Lord, Thou invitest us to spiritual enjoyments— To pleasures exquisite and refreshing.

M. Thou manifestest Thyself, O Lord, unto us,

As Thou dost not unto those who seek Thee not.

P. We behold thy goings, O God, our King,

In the sanctuary.

C. Oh, that the vision of Thee might fill my heart,
That I might never more forget Thee.

All. Thou manifestest Thyself, O Lord, unto us,

As Thou dost not unto those that seek Thee not.
We behold thy goings, O God, our King,

In the sanctuary.

Oh, that the vision of Thee might fill our hearts,
That we might never more forget Thee!

M. I know, O Lord, that Thou requirest work
As well as rest,

P. Self-sacrifice as well as enjoyment,

C. Justice and mercy as well as worship.

All. We know, O Lord, that Thou requirest work
As well as rest,

Self-sacrifice as well as enjoyment,
Justice and mercy as well as worship.

M. May we honour Thee, Thou Searcher of hearts,
As Thou wouldst have us to honour Thee.
P. May we worship Thee, who art Spirit,
In spirit and in truth.

C. May every day be a Sabbath,

And every Sabbath a day of deeds,

As pure and thrilling as the song

of the sanctuary.

All. May we honour Thee, Thou Searcher of hearts,

As Thou wouldst have us to honour Thee,

May we worship Thee, who art Spirit,

In spirit and in truth.

May every day be a Sabbath,

And every Sabbath a day of deeds,

As pure and thrilling as the songs of the upper sanctuary.

M. May we serve Thee in this our day and generation. P. May we work whilst it is called to-day,

Knowing that the night cometh, in which no man can work.

C. When life's work is done,

May we Sabbatize eternally with Thee.

All. May we serve Thee in this our day and generation. May we work whilst it is called to-day,

Knowing that the night cometh wherein no man can work.

When life's work is done,

May we Sabbatize eternally with Thee.

M. In heaven there is no sorrow,

P. Nor disease, nor pain,

C. Nor death.

All. In heaven there is no sorrow,
Nor disease, nor pain, nor death.
M. Dawn, thou eternal day of rest!
P. Epoch of ceaseless bliss, arrive!
C. Come, thou Sabbath ne'er to end!
All. Dawn, thou eternal day of rest!
Epoch of ceaseless bliss, arrive!
Come, thou Sabbath ne'er to end!
M. But ere it dawn, my Saviour,

Wash this soul of mine from every stain.
P. Ere it arrive teach me to do thy will,
And all thy pleasure to fulfil.

C. Ere it come may my earthly Sabbaths
Foretastes be of bliss, and grand pre-visions
Of thy glorious Self.

All. But ere it dawn, my Saviour,

Wash this soul of mine from every stain.

Ere it arrive teach me to do thy will,

And all thy pleasure to fulfil.

Ere it come, may our earthly Sabbaths

Foretastes be of bliss, and grand pre-visions

Of thy glorious Self.

M. The Lord of Sabbaths praise.

P. Blessed be He who giveth his people rest;

C. That refresheth them from the sanctuary of his glory. All. Praised be the Lord of Sabbaths!

Blessed be He who giveth his people rest;

That refresheth them from the sanctuary of his glory!

Amen.
