VII. SIN.

C. *The mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, And called the earth, from the rising of the sun, to the going down thereof.

M. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,

God hath shined.

P. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence;
A fire shall devour before Him,

And it shall be very tempestuous round about Him.
All. He shall call to the heavens from above,

And to the earth, that He may judge his people.

M. Gather my saints together unto me;

Those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. All. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness : For God is Judge Himself.

M. Hear, O my people, and I will speak ;

O Israel, and I will testify against thee:

I am God, even thy God.

I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices, or thy burntofferings,

To have been continually before me :

I will take no bullock out of thy house,

Nor he-goats out of thy folds.

For every beast of the forest is mine;
And the cattle upon a thousand hills.

I know all the fowls of the mountains;
And the wild beasts of the field are mine.
If I were hungry, I would not tell thee;
For the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
Will I eat the flesh of bulls,

Or drink the blood of goats?

* Psalm 1.

All. Offer unto God thanksgiving;

And pay thy vows unto the Most High. M. And call upon me in the day of trouble:

I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. P. But unto the wicked God saith,

What hast thou to do to declare my statutes,

Or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? C. Seeing thou hatest instruction,

And castest my words behind thee.

When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him,

And hast been partaker with adulterers.

Thou givest thy mouth to evil,

And thy tongue frameth deceit.

Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother:

Thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

M. These things hast thou done, and I kept silence ;

Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself:

But I will reprove thee,

And set them in order before thine eyes.

Now, consider this, ye that forget God,

Lest I tear you in pieces,

And there be none to deliver.

Whoso offereth praise, glorifieth me;

And to him that ordereth his conversation aright,
Will I show the salvation of God.

All. God be merciful to us sinners.
M. *Some remove the landmarks:

They violently take away flocks and feed thereof.
C. They drive away the ass of the fatherless;
They take the widow's ox for a pledge.

P. They turn the needy out of the way;

The poor of the earth hide themselves together.

*Job xxiv. 2-17.

All. Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to

their work;

Rising betimes for a prey:

The wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.

M. They reap every one his corn in the field;

And they gather the vintage of the wicked.
P. They cause the naked to lodge without clothing,
That they have no covering in the cold.

They are wet with the showers of the mountains,
And embrace the rock for want of a shelter.
C. They pluck the fatherless from the breast,
And take a pledge of the poor.

They cause him to go naked without clothing,
And they take away the sheaf from the hungry.
Who make oil within their walls,

And tread their winepresses, but suffer thirst.
All. Men groan from out of the city,

And the soul of the wounded crieth out;

Yet God layeth not folly to them.

M. They are of those that rebel against the light;

They know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.

C. The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor

and needy,

And in the night is as a thief.

P. The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, Saying, No eye shall see me :

And disguiseth his face.

C. In the dark they dig through houses,

Which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: They know not the light.

All. For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: If one know them they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

M. *Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, And makest thy boast of God, and knowest his will, And approvest the things that are more excellent,

Being instructed out of the law;

And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind,

A light of them which are in darkness,

An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes,

Who hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in

the law.

P. Thou therefore that teachest another,

Teachest thou not thyself?

Thou that preachest a man should not steal,

Dost thou steal?

Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery,
Dost thou commit adultery ?

Thou that abhorrest idols,

Dost thou commit sacrilege?

Thou that makest thy boast of the law,

Through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? All. Therefore thou art inexcusable, Oman,

Whosoever thou art that judgest;

For wherein thou judgest another thou condemnest thyself.

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth

Against them which commit such things.

And thinkest thou this, O man,

That judgest them that do such things, and doest the same, That thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering;

Not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

* Romans ii. 17-23, and 1-6.

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart

Treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath

And revelation of the righteous judgment of God:

Who will render to every man according to his deeds. M. *Have mercy upon me, O God,

According to thy loving-kindness;

According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies
Blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity;
And cleanse me from my sin.

P. For I acknowledge my transgressions:

And my sin is ever before me.

All. Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in thy sight:

That Thou mightest be justified when Thou speakest,
And clear when Thou judgest.

M. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity;

And in sin did my mother conceive me.

C. Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts;

And in the hidden part Thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

P. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean :

Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

All. Make me to hear joy and gladness;

That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

M. Hide thy face from my sins,

And blot out all mine iniquities.

C. Create in me a clean heart, O God;
And renew a right spirit within me.
P. Cast me not away from thy presence;
And take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

All. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation:
And uphold me with thy free spirit.

* Psalm li.
