there, which broke out in less than a year. The design was conducted more regularly than in England, and was better concealed. It was begun with endeavours for a remonstrance against the union; and the advice of the most famous lawyers were asked upon it, who declared the act of union contained several nullities, and to be very defective. The opposite party, to prevent a remonstrance so disagreeable to the court, were forced to consent there should be no address of congratulation: and that, presented by the Kirk, had suffered great debates about the manner in which king Wil- | liam was mentioned, and had passed with much difficulty. The Highlanders were silent, and decared not themselves. It was only known, that they were making provision of powder and ball.
FIRST SESSION OF THE FIFTH PARLIA
MENT OF GREAT BRITAIN. Meeting of the New Parliament.] March 17, 1715. This day the New Parliament met at Westminster. His majesty, being seated on his royal throne, adorned with his crown and regal ornaments, and attended with his officers of state, the prince of Wales sitting in his place, and the lords in their robes, commanded the gentleman usher of the black rod to let the Commons know, "It is his majesty's pleasure, they attend him immediately, in the House of Peers." Who being come, the Lord Chancellor, receiving directions from his majesty, said,
My lords, and gentlemen; I am commanded by his majesty to acquaint you, that his majesty does not intend to declare the causes of calling this parliament till there be a Speaker of the House of Commons.
