PREFACE.

A BIBLIOGRAPHY as a mere catalogue or list of publications must appear to the uninitiated simply chaos, conveying apparently but little or no information. Besides, then, the general index at the end, which brings together all subjects and place-names, the short analysis by way of introduction-very short for so long a textby noting the chief men and chief events, will serve as a further guide and help a little more to open up the general contents. It is thus hoped that this work may not be treated as a mere collection of books to be glanced at without understanding, but rather that it may serve as a means towards tracing the life, and the thoughts, and the various aspirations of our not unworthy antecessors. Treated in this way it will be a surprise to manyprobably to very many-to find how closely the literature of a county will reflect the history of the country.

The plan adopted is that now generally used, known as the alphabetical.

I. A book is placed under the author's name.

Sometimes this

is not on the title page but signed to the preface, or in case of pamphlets at the end. Sometimes too by pseudonym and sometimes by only initials.

2. If quite anonymous and the title refers to a personal name or a place name such names are used.

3. In the absence of either of the above then the first noun in the title is taken.
