the battle of Bladensburg and capture of Washington. Slightly wounded in the head and very severely in the groin at Bladensburg. He received the war medal with seven
clasps. Commanded the Light Division throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-5, including the battles of the Alma (horse shot under him), Balaklava, and Inkerman
(severely wounded-shot through the arm), and siege of Sebastopol (medal and four clasps, G.C.B., Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, 1st class of the Medjidie, Sardinian and
Turkish medals); appointed Commander of the Forces in Ireland, March, 1860; in 1863 he became Colonel-in-Chief of the Rifle Brigade; died at Linkwood, 27th Aug., 1865.

He served in the West Indies in the 43rd, under Sir Charles Grey, and was present at the siege of Fort Bourbon, the capture of Martinique, St. Lucia, and Guadaloupe, and at the assault made by the enemy on the fortress of Fleur d'Epée; he next served under Brigadier-General C. Graham at Berville Camp in Guadaloupe; and commanded the Regt. engaged in the action of the 30th Sept., 1794, and in the different attacks made by the enemy until the 4th Oct., when he was severely wounded and taken prisoner, in which situation he remained two years. Gold Medal for Vimiero, Corunna, Busaco, Salamanca, Vittoria, St. Sebastian, and Nive. "In consideration of his eminent services, and we can honestly assert that there was not a better soldier in any army; he was nominated a Knight Commander of the Military Order of the Bath, by his Sovereign. The Portugese Government conferred the Order of the Tower and Sword on Sir John for the able services he rendered to that nation." Died at Guernsey, 23rd Nov., 1844.
