Lieutenant-General Sir James Pulteney; served the expedition to North Holland in 1799; and was present at the action of the 27th Aug., on the landing near the Helder; as As military secretary he accompanied the Army to Ferrol and the coast of Spain in 1800. Returned to England and continued to serve with the Army on the south coast until promoted in the 43rd; the 2nd Battalion of which he commanded during the organisation and training unbounded as it was merited. of the Light Brigade, under Sir John Moore. On the 17th April, 1807, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel, and appointed Deputy Adjutant-General at the Cape of Good Hope. In 1816 proceeded to Van Diemen's Land as governor, and during the period of eight years, in which he conducted the affairs of that rising Colony, he secured the full The following extracts from Mr. Montgomery Martin's work, Van Diemen's Land, Moral, Physical, and Political,' will shew how SPENCER, Hon. Sir Augustus Almeric, K.C.B. highly his character was appreciated in his public capacity by the colonists themselves:-"Courteous and affable, he won golden opinions' from all sorts of people; secured the secured for the land he had for several years ruled, was presented, to which a suitable and earnest reply was returned. universal affection and esteem; whilst his readiness to correct abuse or error-which his clear and comprehensive mind easily traced to its source-rendered his popularity as personal friend. The people followed him en masse to the shore, all eager to manifest their regard.' Prior to his embarkation for England, an address expressive of the most affectionate attachment, and recapitulating the numerous benefits he had Died 4th June, 1848. TALBOT, George Ensign 33rd, 2nd Feb., 1826. Served at Gibraltar; and with the expedition to Portugal in 1808; A.D.C. to Governor-General of Canada, 1842; at the death of Sir C. Bagot was appointed A.D.C. to Sir Richard Jackson, afterwards his military secretary, and continued in that office with his successor, Lord Cathcart; on his departure from Canada, again resumed the office of A.D.C. to Sir B. D'Urban; at his death, reassumed the military secretaryship to the present General Sir W. Rowan. In June, 1851, proceeded to Madras as military secretary to Sir Richard Armstrong, Commander-in-Chief, and remained with him as such during his command; after which appointed military secretary to his successor, General Stavely, continued such till his death, then with his successor, General Sewell; after which rejoined and commanded the 43rd Regt., until appointed Deputy Major-General of Her Majesty's forces Madras, which he retained until the early part of the year 1861; Brevet-Major, 9th Nov., 1846; Brevet-Lieut.-Colonel, 20th June, 1854; Colonel, 18th Feb., 1858; retired 11th Feb., 1862. Promoted to a Captain in 1st West India Regt. Served
in the expedition under Sir Charles Grey, on the reduction of all the French islands, was stationed at Point Petre, Guadaloupe, where a mortality of from ten to thirteen
men a day, reduced the Regt. to ninety-six rank and file; and Guadaloupe being disputed inch by inch, the 43rd, at the time of its capture at Berville, did not contain more
than two officers and twenty men fit for duty. He was confined for fifteen months on board a hulk, subject to the tyranny and cruelty of Victor Hughes, thence sent to France,
and afterwards obtained permission to go to England on parole, on arrival was appointed Adjutant of the 43rd. He embarked as a private individual, being still a prisoner,
with the 43rd, a second time for the West Indies, in order that the moment his exchange was completed, he might resume his duties as Adjutant. In Dec., 1798, he was pro-
moted to a company in the 1st West India Regt. ; in 1799 to the Royals; was A.Q.M.Gen, in North Britain; May, 1803, embarked a third time for the West Indies; after
the capture of St. Lucia, was appointed Secretary to the Colony; was afterwards Brigade Major to Sir William Myers, and subsequently A.D.C. to Sir G. Beckwith:
promoted to a Majority in the 8th West India Regt., and removed to the 14th Foot, 10th Sept., 1807; in 1808 he served as an Assistant-Adjutant-General in the expedition to
Spain under Sir David Baird; and in 1809 in the Walcheren expedition; Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, 4th June, 1813; Lieutenant-Colonel 44th Regt., 11th Nov., 1825;
appointed Inspecting Field Officer of a Recruiting District, 25th Aug., 1829; Colonel, 22nd July, 1830; was at the battle of Waterloo; died at Kingston, Upper Canada,
