in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trefpaffes, As we forgive them that trefpafs against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, heavenly Father,

A we give thee humble thanks, that thou haft vouch

fafed to call us to the knowledge of thy grace, and faith in thee; increase this knowledge, and confirm this faith in us evermore. Give thy holy Spirit to this infant, that be, being born again, and being made an heir of everlafting falvation, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, may continue thy fervant, and attain thy promife; through the fame our Lord Jefus Chrift thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. ¶ Then fhall the Prieft demand the Name of the Child; which being by the Godfathers and Godmothers pronounced, the Minister fhall fay,

DOST in the wome, the vain pomp and glory

OST thou, in the name of this Child, renounce the devil and all works,

of this world, with all covetous defires of the fame, and the carnal defires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow, nor be led by them?

Anfwer. I renounce them all.

Minifler.

OST thou believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth?

And in Jefus Chrift his only-begotten Son our Lord? And that he was conceived by the Holy Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary; that he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; that he went down into hell, and also did rise again the third day; that he af cended into heaven, and fitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; and from thence fhall come again at the end of the world, to judge the quick and the dead?

Almighty and everlafting, &c.] This prayer in the early prayer-books came after the creed. It was placed where it now ftands at the laft review. Then fhall, &c.] In Edward VIth's firft book the rubric ran thus: "Then fhall they fay the creed, and then the priest," &c. In James Ift's prayer-book it was arranged as it now ftands, to the words "All this ftedfaftly believe."

And doft thou believe in the Holy Ghoft; the holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the Remiffion of fins; the Refurrection of the flesh; and everlafting life after death?

Answer. All this I ftedfastly believe.

Minifter.

WILT thou then obediently keep God's holy will

and commandments, and walk in the fame all the days of thy life?

Anfwer. I will.

WE

Then the Priest fhall fay,

*Here Prieft fhall make a cruis

for chead.

E receive this Child into the congregation of Christ's flock, and do fign bim with the Pric the fign of the Crofs, in token that hereafter upon the child's be fhall not be afhamed to confefs the faith of Chrift crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner against fin, the world, and the devil; and to continue Chrift's faithful foldier and fervant unto his life's end. Amen.

Then fhall the Prieft fay,

EEING now, dearly beloved brethren, that this child is by baptifm regenerate, and grafted into the body of Chrift's church; let us give thanks unto Almighty God for thefe benefits; and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that he may lead the rest of his life according to this beginning.

Then fhall the Priest fay,

WE yield thee moft hearty thanks, most merciful

Father, that it hath pleafed thee to regenerate this infant with thy holy Spirit, to receive him for thine own child by adoption, and to incorporate him into thy holy church. And humbly we beseech thee to grant, that he, being dead unto fin, and living unto righteoufnefs, and

Believe] In Edward VIth's first book, after this profeffion came this rubric: "Then the minifter fhall put the white vefture, commonly called the cryfome, upon the child, faying, Take this," &c. the fame form as in the publick baptifm.

Amen.

T Then all standing up, the Minister shall make this Exhortation to the Godfathers and Godmothers:

FOR

ORASMUCH as this child hath promised by you his fureties, to renounce the devil and all his works, to believe in God, and to ferve him; ye muft remember, that it is your parts and duties to fee that this infant be taught, fo foon as he fhall be able to learn, what a solemn vow, promife, and profeffion, he hath made by you. And that he may know these things the better, ye fhall call upon him to hear fermons; and chiefly ye fhall provide, that he may learn the Creed, the Lord's-Prayer, and the Ten Commandments, in the vulgar tongue, and all other things which a Chriftian ought to know and be lieve to his foul's health; and that this child may be vir tuously brought up to lead a godly and a Chriftian life; remembering alway, that Baptifm doth reprefent unto us our profeffion; which is, to follow the example of our Saviour Chrift, and to be made like unto him; that, as he died, and rofe again for us; fo fhould we, who are baptized, die from fin, and rife again unto righteousness; continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all virtue and godlinefs of living.

But if they which bring the Infant to the Church, do make fuch uncertain anfwers to the Priest's questions, as that it cannot appear that the Child was baptized with water, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (which are effential parts of Baptifm;) then let the Priest baptize it in the Form before appointed for Publick

Then, &c. This rubric, (with the exception of the words "all ftanding up," added at the laft review) the exhortation, and rubric after it, were introduced into Edward VIth's firft book.

And here all the Congregation fhall kneel.

ALMIGHTY and everlafting God, who of thy grek
