LMIGHTY, everliving God, whose most dearlybeloved Son Jefus Chrift, for the forgiveness of our fins, did fhed out of his moft precious fide both water and blood; and gave commandment to his difciples, that they fhould go teach all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghoft: Regard, we beseech thee, the fupplications of this congregation; fanctify this water to the mystical washing away of fin; and grant that the perfons now to be baptized therein, may receive the fulness of thy grace, and ever remain in the number of thy faithful and elect children, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then fhall the Prieft take each Perfon to be baptized by the right hand, and placing him conveniently by the Font,

Then fhall the Priest fay,

EEING now, dearly-beloved brethren, that thefe perfons are regenerate, and grafted into the body of Chrift's Church; let us give thanks unto Almighty God for thefe benefits; and with one accord make our prayers unto him, that they may lead the rest of their lives according to this beginning.

Then fhall be faid the Lord's Prayer, all kneeling.

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trefpaffes, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

WE

VE yield thee humble thanks, O heavenly Father, that thou haft vouchfafed to call us to the knowledge of thy grace, and faith in thee; increase this knowledge, and confirm this faith in us evermore. Give thy Holy Spirit to these perfons; that being now born again, and made heirs of everlasting falvation, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, they may continue thy fervants, and attain thy promises, through the fame Lord Jefus Chrift thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the fame Holy Spirit, everlaftingly. ORASMUCH as thefe perfons have promised, in your prefence, to renounce the devil and all his works, to believe in God, and to ferve him; ye muft remember, that it is your part and duty to put them in mind, what a folemn vow, promife, and profeffion they have now made before this congregation, and especially before you their chosen witneffes. And ye are alfo to call upon them to use all diligence to be rightly inftructed in God's holy Word, that fo they may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord Jefus Chrift, and live godly, righteously, and foberly in this prefent world.

And then speaking to the new baptized Perfons, he fhall proceed, and fay,

ND as for you, who have now by baptifm put on Christ, it is your part and duty also, being made the children of God, and of the light by faith in Jefus Chrift, to walk anfwerably to your Chriftian calling, as becometh the children of light: remembering always that baptifm reprefenteth unto us our profeffion; which is, to follow the example of our Saviour Chrift, and to be made like unto him; that as he died, and rose again for us; fo fhould we, who are baptized, die from fin, and rife again unto righteoufnefs; continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all virtue and godlinefs of living.

It is expedient that every Perfon thus baptized should be confirmed by the Bishop fo foon after bis Baptifm as conveniently may be; that fo he may be admitted to the boly Communion.

If any Perfons, not baptized in their Infancy, fhall be brought to be baptized before they come to Years of Discretion to answer for themselves; it may fuffice to use the Office for Publick Baptifm of Infants, or (in cafe of extreme danger) the Office for Private Baptifm; only changing the word Infant, for Child, or Perfon, as occafion requireth.

THAT IS TO SAY,

Anfw. They did promife and vow three things in my name. First, that I should renounce the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanity of this wicked world, and all the finful lufts of the flesh. A Catechifm] The ancient Jews had Catechifts for the inftruction of their children in the law and Talmud; they were called "Inftructors of Babes;" fee Rom. ii. 20. Having attained the age of thirteen, they were brought to the Temple, for publick examination; and if approved, were then called "Children of the Precept;" and were thenceforth answerable for their own conduct. Grotius very ingenioufly fuppofes that this prac tice explains our Saviour's examination in the Temple, when he had attained twelve years of age; fince this premature prefentation for that pur pose was fometimes the cafe with children of extraordinary abilities, who were then proverbially faid to have "run before the command;" Grot. in Luc. ii. 42. The early Chriftians adopted this practice from the Jews, and appointed an officer in every church called a Catechist, who inftructed the young people in the principles of religion.

The Bishop] In all the Prayer-Books till the laft Review, the Catechifin makes part of the Confirmation fervice. The rubrick is the fame as the above, except that the word "Child" occurs inftead of "Perfon." In the first book the Catechifm concludes with the Belief. In James Ift's time, the fervice was penned as we have it at prefent by Bishop Overall, and inferted in his Prayer-Book A. D. 1603.
