man, Acts xi.

The instances recorded in the New Testament of men "continuing instant in prayer" are familiar to all.

JESUS, "our great Example," kneeled down and prayed; and "continued all night in prayer to GOD."

He prayed for His enemies as well as for His disciples.

The Christian Seaman, too, will recognise the duty of " kneeling before his Maker" in prayer, and he will not cease to ask for courage to do so and

for grace to persevere in doing so, both at church (when it is possible) and at night and morning.

The Prayers hereafter written down are meant rather to suggest thoughts for prayer than as forms to be always used.

1. They may merely be read over from time to time as suggestive of prayerful thoughts.

2. Or they may be taken as the foundation or keel on which to uprear that ship of daily prayer which must be daily launched to heaven.

3. Or they may be used as forms of prayer, great care being taken to say them from the heart, and thus prevent them from becoming formal.

MORNING PRAYERS

For which there is always time. Òn waking lift up the heart instantly to GOD and say:

Glory be to the FATHER, and to the SON, and to the HOLY GHOST; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

After turning out, whilst lashing up and stowing your hammock, say:

O Holy, Blessed, and Glorious Trinity, three Persons and one GOD, I acknowledge Thee to be the LORD. I thank Thee for my creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life. Make me to show forth Thy praise, not only with my lips but in my life, by giving up myself to Thy service.

Vouchsafe, O LORD, to keep me this day without sin, especially the sin of [here think of the sins you know you are most likely to commit]. Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

Defend me and my [wife, children, father, mother, brothers, &c.; remember those for whom you ought to pray], and all my shipmates in all assaults of our enemies; that we, trusting in Thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of JESUS CHRIST our Lord. Amen.

Our FATHER which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it

is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil : For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

EVENING PRAYERS

Which may be said after a heavy day's work, or if you have been employed up to the time for turning in.

LORD, have mercy. CHRIST, have mercy. LORD, have mercy.

Our FATHER which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that And lead us not trespass against us. into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
