Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the LORD.

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Give me, O GOD, the patience and gentleness of JESUS CHRIST.

When Tempted to join the Company of Bad Men.

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.

My GOD, give me courage now to cay, No.

I am weak, but Thou art strong.

When Tempted to join the Company of Bad Women.

Come unto Me all that travail and re heavy laden, and I will refresh you. LORD, help me, or I perish.

What is a man profited if he shall ain the whole world and lose his own soul.

The Sailor's Life of Christian Duty. '

HOLY BAPTISM.

I

HAVE you been baptized? or christened? which means the same thing. It may seem a strange question to ask. If, however, you cannot answer "yes" to it, do not let another hour pass without making up your mind that you will be baptized as soon as you can. Our Captain-the great Captain of our salvation-ordered every one to be baptized, "In the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY GHOST" (Matthew xxviii. 19). The Apostles obeyed this command as long as they were alive; and in one day baptized as many as 3,000 people in one city (Acts ii. 41). Before the Apostles died, they ordained others to

carry on their work. You will have no difficulty in finding some one who is commissioned to baptize you. Not only is it right that you should be baptized, because JESUS CHRIST has commanded it; but further you have no title to the name of Christian unless you are baptized. He said, "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John iii. 5). Ever since these words were uttered they have been understood of Christian Baptism. As soon as St. Paul found out what a mistake he had been making in fighting against CHRIST and His disciples, he went and was immediately baptized, and his sins were then and there washed away. This is a great mystery. The Chaplain or any well instructed Christian will explain it more fully to you; but no one can explain it so that you will be able to understand it thoroughly. Shew your love to GOD by obeying His command. Make sure that you are one of GOD's children by being first washed and renewed by the HOLY GHOST (Titus iii. 5).

CONFIRMATION.

You have heard of this word before. In the training ship many of the boys were confirmed, perhaps you were one of them; if you were, these few words will bring back to you some of the thoughts which filled your mind when the Bishop laid his hands upon your head. If you have not been confirmed, what I am going to say will, I hope, shew you that it is your duty to be confirmed without delay. To be confirmed means to be made strong. Who is there that does not need to be made strong in his Christian profession?

In Confirmation we are made strong by the power of the HOLY GHOST, given in the laying on of hands. The HOLY GHOST made us Christians in Baptism. In Confirmation He strengthens us that we may become perfect Christians. He is the giver of life, and this life He gave us in our baptism. In Confirmation He comes to strengthen the life He gave. And as we can be baptized but once, so we can only
