I. NEVER begin or end the day without saying your prayers, even if it is only the LORD's PrayerMatthew vi. 9; vii. 7, 8. In the morning, if you have no better time, you can say them whilst lashing up and stowing your hammock-2 Corinthians

II. Never take your meals without thanking GoD before and after-Matthew vi. 26; John vi. 11; 1 Thessalonians v. 18. Try to remember at the same time that Jesus is the Bread of Life, especially in the blessed Sacrament of Holy CommunionJohn vi. 51, 55; Matthew xxvi. 26; 1 Corinthians X. 16.

III. Bring no tracts or books of any description to church, except those which are necessary to enable you to take part in the service-Micah vi. 8; Matthew xv. 7, 8; Ecclesiastes ix. 10.

IV. As often as you go aloft try to think of GOD, and say to yourself, "Into Thy Hands, O LORD, Í commend my spirit"-Isaiah xxvi. 3; Psalm xci.

V. Remember that GOD always sees you. Strive therefore to do your work on deck thoroughly and quietly at all times, and not only when officers and petty officers are looking on-Luke xvi. 10; Colossians iii. 22, 23.

VI. Never tell a lie or speak half the truth either to screen yourself or to excuse others. Be careful also to act as well as to speak honestly-Revelation xxi. 8; Revelation xxii. 15; Acts v. I to II.

VII. As the comfort of a mess depends on all those who are in it, remember always to do your part by keeping from noise when it disturbs your messmates-Matthew vii. 12; by thinking of their comforts at least as often as you think of your own -Philippians ii. 4; and by avoiding quarrels or high words with any one-Philippians ii. 14; Acts vii. 26. If others trangress this rule, you need notGalatians vi. 9; Exodus xxiii. 2.

The Sailor's Life of Prayer.

"PRAYER is the lifting up of a pure mind to GOD, the pouring out of a contrite heart, with a sure persuasion that GOD will grant our requests, and give ear to the suit we make unto Him. Do we ask When we are to pray? Always, without ceasing.' Where? In all places. How? From the heart

lifting up pure and clean hands; i.e., in faith and love. Our Prayer, feathered with these two things, flieth as an arrow straight to Heaven."Archbishop Sandys.

The Christian Sailor is a man of Prayer, believing that

(a) Prayer is a duty at all times;
(b) Prayer has the promise of a
blessing;

(c) Prayer has been the practice and
delight of holy men in every

age.

(a) PRAYER IS A DUTY AT ALL TIMES.

'My duty towards GOD is to... worship Him, to give Him thanks, to call upon Him."-Church Catechism.

"Seek ye the LORD while He may be found. Call ye upon Him while He is near."-Isaiah lv. 6.

"Call upon Mein the time of trouble." -Psalm 1. 15.

"After this manner pray ye.”— Matthew vi. 9.

66 Take ye heed, watch and pray.”— Mark xiii. 33.

66 Men ought always to pray, and not to faint."-Luke xviii. 1.

"In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto GOD."— Philippians iv. 6.

"Pray without ceasing."-1 Thessalonians v. 17.

(b) PRAYER HAS THE PROMISE OF A

BLESSING.

"If thou shalt seek the LORD thy GOD, thou shalt find Him, if thou seek Him with all thy heart and with all thy soul."-Deuteronomy iv. 29.

"The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, yea all such as call upon Him faithfully. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him; He also will hear their cry, and will help them."-Psalm cxlv. 18, 19.

"The LORD is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him."-Lamentations iii. 25.

"Thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.-Matthew vi. 6.

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. . . . Your Father which is in heaven will give good things to them that ask Him."Matthew vii. 7, II.
