PREFACE.

THE CLERICAL DIRECTORY APPENDIX FOR 1861 has been prepared

in deference to the wishes of many of the Subscribers of the work, who have urged its publication on the ground of economy, and as being likely to increase the sphere of usefulness of the DIRECTORY. It was originally the intention of the Conductors of the work to bring out a full and complete edition every year. This announcement was made in the preface of last year's issue; and, in fulfilment of it, the necessary preparations were entered into to publish the work at the appointed time. However, before proceeding far in the task, numerous letters were received from Subscribers and well-wishers of the CLERICAL DIRECTORY, advocating a biennial instead of annual issue of the complete work. It was contended that a supplement of new names and list of deceased clergymen would be quite sufficient to keep up the general correctness of the book in the interval of the two years, and that the reduced price of the publication in this form would enable many members of the Church, otherwise not inclined to purchase the work, to become regular Subscribers.

It is in order to give this very reasonable proposition a fair trial that the Conductors of the CLERICAL DIRECTORY have ventured on the publication of the present APPENDIX. It is an attempt to meet the wishes of the majority of the Subscribers of the work, and nothing more. The Conductors of the CLERICAL DIRECTORY are as desirous as ever to publish the work annually, but will let the result decide whether this form of publication, or the biennial mode of issue, with alternate Supplements, will be generally preferred.
