1 JESUS! and shall it ever be,

A mortal man ashamed of thee,
Ashamed of thee, whom angels praise,
Whose glories shine through endless
days!

2 Ashamed of Jesus! sooner far
Let evening blush to own a star;
He sheds the beams of light divine
O'er this benighted soul of mine.
3 Ashamed of Jesus! just as soon

Let midnight blush to think of noon; 'Tis midnight with my soul till he, [flee. Bright Morning Star, bids darkness 4 Ashamed of Jesus! of that Friend On whom for heaven my hopes depend! It must not be: be this my shame That I no more revere his name. 5 Ashamed of Jesus! yes, I may, When I've no sin to wash away, No tear to wipe, no joy to crave, No fears to quell, no soul to save.

6 Till then-nor is the boasting vainTill then I boast a Saviour slain; And O may this my portion be, That Saviour not ashamed of me. 10

1 WHEN I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me I sacrifice them to his blood. [most, 3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4 Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

11

1 A LITTLE child the Saviour came, The Mighty God was still his name; And angels worshipped, as he lay The seeming infant of a day.

2 He, who a little child began The life divine to show to man, Proclaims from heaven the message 'Let little children come to me.' [free, 3 We bring them, Lord, and with the sign Of sprinkled water name them thine: Their souls with saving grace endow; Baptize them with thy Spirit now.

5

4 O give thine angels charge, good Lord,
Them safely in thy way to guard;
Thy blessing on their lives command,
And write their names upon thy hand.
O thou, who by an infant's tongue
Dost hear thy perfect glory sung,
May these, with all the heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

1 JESUS, where'er thy people meet, There they behold thy mercy-seat; Where'er they seek thee thou art found,

And every place is hallowed ground. 2 For thou, within no walls confined, Inhabitest the humble mind;

Such ever bring thee where they come, And, going, take thee to their home. 3 Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few, Thy former mercies here renew; Here to our waiting hearts proclaim The sweetness of thy saving name.

4 Here may we prove the power of prayer
To strengthen faith and sweeten care,
To teach our faint desires to rise,
And bring all heaven before our eyes.
Lord, we are few, but thou art near,
Nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear;
Orend the heavens, come quickly down,
And make a thousand hearts thine own.

1 THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,

The hills their fixed seat forsake,

1 FATHER of heaven! whose love profound

A ransom for our souls hath found, Before thy throne we sinners bend; To us thy pardoning love extend. 2 Almighty Son! Incarnate Word! Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord! Before thy throne we sinners bend; To us thy saving grace extend. 3 Eternal Spirit! by whose breath The soul is raised from sin and death, Before thy throne we sinners bend; To us thy quickening power extend. 4 Jehovah-Father, Spirit, SonMysterious Godhead, Three in One! Before thy throne we sinners bend; Grace, pardon, life to us extend.

1 COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, My sinful maladies remove;

Be thou my light, be thou my guide; O'er every thought and step preside.

2 The light of truth to me display,

1 0 HAPPY day, that fixed my choice On thee, my Saviour and my God! Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad. 2 O happy bond, that seals my vows To him who merits all my love! Let cheerful anthems fill his house, While to that sacred shrine I move. 3 'Tis done! the great transaction's done!

I am my Lord's, and he is mine; He drew me, and I followed on, Charmed to confess the voice Divine.

That I may know and choose my way; 4 Now rest, my long-divided heart,

Plant holy fear within mine heart, That I from God may ne'er depart.

3 Lead me to Christ, the living way, Nor let me from his pastures stray;

Fixed on this blissful centre, rest; With ashes who would grudge to part, When called on angels' bread to feast?

5 High heaven, that heard the solemn

vow,

11

That vow renewed shall daily hear, 1 A LITTLE child the Saviour came,

Till in life's latest hour I bow,

And bless in death a bond so dear.

1 THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,

The hills their fixed seat forsake,

And, withering, from the vault of night The stars withdraw their feeble light. 2 The Lord will come! but not the same As once in lowly form he came, A silent Lamb to slaughter led, [dead. The bruised, the suffering, and the B The Lord will come! a dreadful form, With wreath of flame and robe of storm, On cherub wings, and wings of wind, Anointed Judge of human-kind.

4 Can this be he who wont to stray A pilgrim on the world's highway, By power oppressed, and mocked by The Nazarene, the crucified? [pride, 5 While sinners to the rocks complain, And seek the mountain's cleft in vain, The saints, victorious o'er the tomb, Shall sing for joy, 'The Lord is come!' 14

1 JESUS, thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress; 'Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head. 2 Bold shall I stand in thy great day; For who aught to my charge shall lay? Fully, through these, absolved I am From sin and fear, from guilt and shame.

3 When from the dust of death I rise To claim my mansion in the skies, Even then, this shall be all my plea, 'Jesus hath lived, hath died for me.' 4 This spotless robe the same appears, When ruined nature sinks in years; No age can change its constant hue; The robe of Christ is ever new.

50 let the dead now hear thy voice; Now bid thy banished ones rejoice; Their beauty this, their glorious dress, Jesus, thy blood and righteousness. 15

1 0 LOVE, how deep! how broad! how It fills the heart with ecstasy, [high! That God, the Son of God, should take Our mortal form, for mortals' sake.

2 He sent no angel to our race, Of higher or of lower place,

But wore the robe of human frame, And he himself to this world came. 3 For us baptized, for us he bore His holy fast, and hungered sore; For us temptations sharp he knew, For us the tempter overthrew.

4

For us he prayed, for us he taught, For us his daily works he wrought,By words and signs and actions thus Still seeking, not himself, but us. 5 For us, to wicked men betrayed, Scourged, mocked, in crown of thorns arrayed,

He bore the shameful cross and death; For us at length gave up his breath. 6 For us he rose from death again; For us he went on high to reign; For us he sent his Spirit here To guide, to strengthen, and to cheer. 7 To him whose boundless love has won Salvation for us through his Son, To God the Father glory be Both now and through eternity.

1

ARM of the Lord, awake, awake! Put on thy strength, the nations shake, And let the world, adoring, see Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee. 2 Say to the heathen from thy throne, 'I am Jehovah, God alone;'

Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.
3 Let Zion's time of favour come;
O bring the tribes of Israel home;
And let our wondering eyes behold
Gentiles and Jews in Jesus' fold.

4 Almighty God, thy grace proclaim
In every clime of every name;
Let adverse powers before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour Lord of all.

17

1 POUR out thy Spirit from on high;

Lord, thine assembled servants bless; Graces and gifts to each supply, [ness. And clothe them with thy righteous

2 Within thy temple when they stand, To teach the truth, as taught by thee,

Saviour, like stars in thy right hand The angels of the churches be.

3 Wisdom and zeal and faith impart, Firmness with meekness, from above,

To bear thy people on their heart, And love the souls whom thou dost love;

4 To watch and pray, and never faint, By day and night strict guard to keep,

To warn the sinner, cheer the saint, Nourish thy lambs, and feed thy sheep;

5 Then, when their work is finished here, In humble hope their charge resign. When the Chief Shepherd shall appear, O God, may they and we be thine. 18

1 0 SPIRIT of the living God,

In all thy plenitude of grace, Where'er the foot of man hath trod, Descend on our apostate race.

2 Give tongues of fire and hearts of love To preach the reconciling word; Give power and unction from above, Whene'er the joyful sound is heard. 3 Be darkness, at thy coming, light; Confusion, order, in thy path; Souls without strength inspire with might;

Bid mercy triumph over wrath. 4 O Spirit of the Lord, prepare

All the round earth her God to meet; Breathe thou abroad like morning air, Till hearts of stone begin to beat. 5 Baptize the nations; far and nigh The triumphs of the cross record; The name of Jesus glorify,

Till every kindred call him Lord. 19

1 O JESUS, Lord of heavenly grace, Thou Brightness of thy Father's face, Thou Fountain of eternal light, Whose beams disperse the shades of night,

2 Come, holy Sun of heavenly love, Shower down thy radiance from above,

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Thy precious time misspent redeem;
Each present day thy last esteem;
Improve thy talent with due care;
For the great day thyself prepare.
3 In conversation be sincere;

Keep conscience as the noontide clear; Think how all-seeing God thy ways And all thy secret thoughts surveys. 4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart, And with the angels bear thy part, Who all night long unwearied sing High praise to the eternal King.

5 All praise to thee, who safe hast kept, And hast refreshed me while I slept; Grant, Lord, when I from death shall I may of endless light partake. [wake, Lord, I my vows to thee renew; Disperse my sins as morning dew; Guard my first springs of thought and

will,

And with thyself my spirit fill.
