Page PREFACE This publication is intended to provide an up-to-date reference to the Longshoremen's and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act and its extensions-laws which are administered by the U.S. Department of Labor through the Bureau of Employees' Compensation. The material has been taken from the United States Code. The Code should be consulted if more detailed information is required than that contained in the Appendix found in the back of this book. Reference should also be had to the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 20, Chapter I for the official Regulations applicable. Below are given the names of the Acts covered herein and a brief summary of the employees and employments covered: LONGSHOREMEN'S AND HARBOR WORKERS' COMPENSATION ACT This Act (33 U.S.C., 901—50)1 was passed March 4, 1927, to provide workmen's compensation benefits for employees (not seamen) of private employers any of whose employees are employed in maritime employment in whole or in part upon the navigable waters of the United States (including any drydock). DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION ACT On May 17, 1928, the Longshoremen's and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act was extended to employees in private employment in the District of Columbia (36 D.C.C. 501) 2. DEFENSE BASE ACT This Act (42 U.S.C., 1651) extended the provisions of the Longshoremen's and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act to any employment (1) at military, air, and naval bases acquired by the United States from foreign countries; (2) on lands occupied or used by the United States for military or naval purposes outside the continental limits of the United States, including the United States Naval Operating Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Canal Zone; (3) upon any public work in any Territory or possession outside the continental United States (including the United States Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Canal Zone) if such employment is under a contract of a contractor with the United States; (4) under a contract 1 (Title 33 United States Code, sections 901-950) *(Title 36 District of Columbia Code, section 501) |
