tleness. We have also been prone to justify ourselves, and to find fault with others. Well may we fear to lift up our eyes unto Thee, O God, for Thou hast set all our iniquities before Thee, and our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. O Lord, we humble ourselves at thy foot-stool: not only do we bend our knees in prayer, but we desire to bow down our souls before Thee. Unto us belong shame and confusion of face.

And yet, O most merciful Father, we hope, we pray for forgiveness. Hast Thou not said that if we confess our sins, Thou art faithful and just to forgive them. Forgive us, therefore, we earnestly entreat Thee. We plead the merits of thy dear Son, for whose sake Thou delightest to show mercy and to forgive. Justify us, we beseech Thee, through faith in his allsufficient merits. For his sake grant us pardon and peace.

We entreat Thee, O Lord, to visit us with thy favour on the ensuing Sabbath. May it prove to us a season of refreshing

from thy presence. So So many of these precious seasons have been lost to us through our negligence and worldliness, that we do now especially entreat Thee to pour out upon us thy Holy Spirit; that we may maintain on the morrow a spiritual frame of mind both in public and in private. Keep us from thinking our own thoughts, and speaking our own words, and following our own ways. May we rise in the morning filled with holy desires to profit by thine ordinances, that we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge and love of Thee.

We beseech Thee to bless thy servants who minister in holy things. Let those who are appointed to teach others be themselves taught of Thee. Qualify them for the duties of their high calling, and give them great success. May thy Spirit so accompany thy word, that we may each, according to our respective need, be awakened, convinced, instructed, established, or comforted in thy sanctuary.

We pray for those in every land, who teach and preach Jesus Christ. May they

enjoy on the morrow thy presence and blessing. Look down in mercy upon all congregations which shall assemble in thy name. Vouchsafe unto them the gracious gifts and influences of thy Spirit. May the number of thy faithful people increase more and more; and may they daily become a more holy, happy, and useful people, devoutly given to serve Thee in all good works.

We pray, O Lord, that thy word may be speedily sent forth into all lands, and that both Jew and Gentile may receive the love of the truth, that they may be saved.

And now that another week of mercies, multiplied each hour, is drawing to a close, we would heartily praise Thee, the Giver of them all. Bless the Lord, O our souls; and all that is within us praise his holy

name.

O Lord God, do Thou hear and answer us. Pardon the imperfection of our prayers, and be Thou graciously pleased to accept them for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Fourth Week.

LORD'S DAY MORNING.

ALMIGHTY GOD, our heavenly Father, who hast graciously brought us to the beginning of this day, pour down thy Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may spend it in thy fear and to thy glory.

We bless and praise thy holy name for thy merciful preservation of us during the night and for thy great goodness in allowing us to see another Sabbath day. May it prove to each of us a season of holy rest and refreshing.

Give

Be with us in thy house of prayer. unto us the hearing ear, the understanding mind, and the believing heart. May it be our desire to hear what God, the Lord,

shall say to us. May we receive the word preached, not as the word of man, but as the word of God; and may it work effectually in us, as in all that believe. O let us not be forgetful hearers, but doers of thy word; remembering that we hear for eternity, and ever bearing in mind that strict account of the use of our Sabbath privileges, which we must one day give at the judgment-seat of Christ.

We confess that we have not profited by them as we should have done; we have not increased in holiness in proportion to our many privileges. Thou mightest justly have cut us down as cumberers of the ground. O for the sake of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, forgive us all that is past, and grant us grace so to improve this Sabbath, that it may increase our meetness for that eternal rest, which remains for the people of God.

Bless all thy faithful ministers. May they determine to know nothing among their flocks, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified enable them rightly to divide
