them to resist the devil. Put into their hearts good desires, and enable them to bring the same to good effect. Watch over them during the weakness and inexperience of their youth, and prepare them for the duties to which thy providence shall call them.

VI.

We especially commend unto Thee the children of this family. Let thy providence lead and thy grace restrain them, through the dangers and temptations of their youth, that they may not run into folly, nor give way to any unbridled appetite. Let not any iniquity have dominion over them; but grant that their hearts may be sound in thy statutes. Be pleased so to order the events of their lives, that, by thy grace, they may be trained up to serve Thee, in the midst of an evil generation; and, after a useful and holy life, may they come to a peaceful and happy death, and reign with Christ in glory everlasting.

BEFORE THE LORD'S SUPPER.

O gracious Redeemer, grant that those of us who hope soon to approach thy table, may be assisted by thy grace in our selfexamination and preparation for this holy ordinance. Do Thou impart to us a lively feeling of our own sinfulness and unprofitableness, and a simple dependence on thy merits. Do thou grant us to hunger for the bread of life. Do Thou enable us to "discern the Lord's body," and to feed on Thee in our hearts, by faith, with thanksgiving. O prepare us by thy grace, that we may with a true penitent heart and lively faith, receive that holy sacrament, so that we may spiritually eat thy flesh and drink thy blood; that we may dwell in Thee, and Thou in us, and that we may be one with Christ, and Christ with us.

BEFORE COMMUNION ON THE LORD'S DAY.

O Lord, who hast told us that the cup of blessing which we bless is the communion of the blood of Christ, and that the bread which we break is the communion of the body of Christ, and who hast called us by a solemn command to do this in remembrance of Thee, we beseech Thee to give a special blessing to those members of our family, who are now about to approach thy table. O Lord Jesus, manifest thyself unto us this day, as Thou dost not unto the world. May we have joy and peace in Thee, which the world can neither give nor take away; and may this joy be our strength. We entreat Thee to grant that this thine ordinance may be very quickening and reviving to our souls, May our corruptions be mortified by a believing view of thy most precious death and passion, and may all graces be imparted and increased, while remembering thy dying love.

AFTER THE LORD'S SUPPER.

O Lord, our God and Saviour, who hast admitted some of us, unworthy and sinful as we are, to that sacred feast in which we feed on Christ, the true bread of life, cause us to retain in our hearts a lively remembrance of so great a token and pledge of thy favour and goodness towards us. May we ever keep in mind with what we have had communion, even the body and blood of Christ, and that we are united to the people of the Lord as one bread and one body. May we therefore come out from the ungodly, and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. Whether we eat or drink, or whatsoever we do, may we do all to thy glory. May we give no offence, nor be a cause of stumbling to any one, but please all men in all things; not seeking our own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. May we especially love the brotherhood, and ever realize our union with all, who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity.

IN TIME OF WAR.

I.

O God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men, and canst make the wrath of man to praise Thee, mercifully grant that the present war in which our country is engaged, may be overruled by Thee for the glory of thy great

name.

May this sore scourge lead us as a nation to humble ourselves before Thee, and to repent of our many sins. Cause us seriously to reflect on the miseries it entails, and to obey the solemn voice which now calls to weeping and supplication. away all hardness of heart, we humbly beseech Thee, and enable us to put away the evils which provoke thy righteous displeasure.

Take

O Lord God of hosts, we would not trust in an arm of flesh our eyes are directed unto Thee. Go forth, we beseech Thee, with our land and naval forces. Deliver
