Collumpton, Boys'. Inspected April 23, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master.
2. Discipline moderate. 3. The children who at this time are acting as monitors are
quite unequal to the work. 4. The instruction upon Scripture subjects is taken pains
with, but at present is very limited; on other subjects very little has as yet been done.
The junior classes are deficient. 5. The master is a pleasing, active-minded young
man, overpowered by numbers, but working very hard; and if he can prepare one or
two candidates for apprenticeship, he will soon, with their assistance, improve his
school.

Collumpton, Girls. Inspected April 23, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a mistress.
2 and 3. Discipline and method require to be improved. 4. Instruction very limited
at this time. 5. The mistress is an earnest person, a good needlewoman, and well
reported of by the School Committee. She is anxious to prepare a stipendiary monitor
for the Girls' school. 6. This school has only lately been opened. The children are
very ignorant at this time; but there is apparently a great desire to make the school
efficient.

Bridgwater. Inspected May 4, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a mistress and au
assistant mistress, assisted by three candidates for apprenticeship. 2. Discipline
good. 3. Method inefficient. 4. The instruction is very moderate, but improving.
5. The elder mistress is leaving for a smaller school in the neighbourhood; and the
assistant mistress, to whom the pupil teachers were to have been apprenticed, I regret
to say that I could not at this time recommend.

Dawlish, Boys'. Inspected May 30, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master and one
monitor, who receives an annual payment from the school committee. 2. Discipline
good. 3. Method fair. 4. Instruction satisfactory, and taken pains with. 5. The
master is a pleasing person, and attentive to his duties.

Dawlish, Girls'. Inspected May 30, 1849-1. A Girls' school under a quiet, religious-
minded, well-intentioned dame. 2. Discipline fair. 3 and 4. Method and instruction
very moderate indeed. There is one elder girl kept as a monitor. A great desire is
expressed to have good and efficient schools in this place.

Alphington, Boys'. Inspected May 31, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master.
2. Discipline fair. 3. Without much method.

Alphington, Girls'. Inspected May 31, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a mistress,
who is very attentive and careful to the upper children, but who is unable single handed
to manage the younger ones. 2 and 3. Discipline and method very good. 4. Instruc-
tion moderate in both schools. 6. The tone of the Girls' school is good; much superior
to that of the Boys' school.

Bath, Lyncombe St. Mark's. Inspected June 1, 1849.-1. An Infants' school under
a mistress aided by four candidates for apprenticeship and two other monitors. 2 and
3. Discipline and method satisfactory. 4. Instruction moderate. 5. The mistress is a
good teacher and appears very fond of her work.

(c) Cut out and make clothes.

5. Master and Mistress.

6. Special.

Bath, Weymouth House. Inspected June 1, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a mis
tress, one apprentice, and several monitors. 2. Discipline good. 3. Method satisfac
tory. 4. This school was not regularly examined, but merely inspected to report upon
the efficiency of the mistress as a class-teacher previous to her receiving her certificate.
5. The mistress is a pleasing, earnest, well-informed person; she instructs a class with
much life and animation, and is well suited for the work she has in hand.

Plymouth, St. Andrew's, Boys'. Inspected June 4, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a
master, one pupil-teacher, and two candidates for apprenticeship. 2 and 3. Discipline
and method satisfactory. 4. Instrucion much the same as last year, not greatly im-
proved; the great change amongst the school children is given as the cause. 4. The
master was trained at Exeter, is quite equal to have apprentices under his care; he is a
pleasing, intelligent person.

Plymouth, St. Andrew's, Girls'. Inspected June 4, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a
mistress. 2 and 3. Discipline and method fair. 4. Instruction very moderate, but im-
proving. 5. The mistress has been taking much pains, and reading hard herself. 6. I
examined two candidates, but their apprenticeship is postponed for another year.

Torquay, Boys'. Inspected June 5, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master and two
candidates for apprenticeship, with four regular monitors. 2 and 3. The discipline and
method are good. 4. The instruction throughout the school very satisfactory.
5. Master shrewd, active, full of energy and zeal, but not strong in health.

Torquay, Girls' and Infants'. Inspected June 5, 1849.-1. Girls' school under a mis-
tress, and an Infants' school under another mistress. 2. The discipline in each school
good. 3. Method fair. 4. Instruction moderate. 5. Mistress of the Girls' school is
equal to take charge of apprentices, but fearful of the additional responsibility. The
Infant mistress is willing and anxious to do her duty towards the children.

Plymouth, Charles School, Boys'. Inspected June 6, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a
master, who is entirely overpowered by numbers, and having no superior monitors in his
school, lacks method and discipline. 4. Considering the disadvantages, the instruction
is certainly fair, though the minds of the children are not enlarged; oral instruction is
much wanted. 5. The master is earnest, zealous, and painstaking; more fitted to
superintend than to instruct so many children.

Plymouth, Charles School, Girls' and Infants'. Inspected June 6, 1849.-1. Girls'
school is in nice order under a mistress and three candidates for apprenticeship. 4. The
instruction is limited, but given with care. 5. Mistress kind, attentive, and pains-
taking.

Plymouth, Charles School, Infants'. Inspected June 6, 1849.-An Infants' school under a mistress, who wants some additional assistance to enable her to keep her children in good order. There is a want of reality in the amount of instruction given.

Tavistock, Boys. Inspected June 7, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master and
three candidates for apprenticeship. 2. Discipline good. 3. Method fair; rather more
attention might be paid to the junior classes. 4. The instruction is given with care.
5. The master is much improved since the last inspection.

Tavistock, Girls' and Infants'. Inspected June 7, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a
mistress, with a junior class, forming at this time an Infants' school in the class-room
under an assistant teacher. 2 and 3. The discipline and method are highly satisfactory.
4. The instruction is sound and carefully given; there is a very nice tone throughout
this school. 5. Mistress quiet, pleasing, and very earnest in her duties.
Northam, Boys'. Inspected June 12, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master, as-
sisted by one stipendiary monitor. 2 and 3. Discipline and method satisfactory. 4. In-
struction given with much care by a quiet, pleasing, hard working master.

Northam, Girls'. Inspected June 12, 1849.-1. A Girls' school under a mistress, with
one stipendiary monitor; the mistress was unable, from indisposition, to attend; the
discipline and order of the school were not so good as they would have been had she
been able to be present. The instruction not equal to the Boys', but, on the whole,
both schools are satisfactory.

Pilton, Barnstaple. Inspected June 13, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master and
one pupil-teacher. 2 and 3. Discipline and method satisfactory; the children have had
much care taken of them, and the tone and character of instruction is good. The master
was trained at Exeter, appears careful, intelligent, and fond of his school, but of a
sullen disposition. Had I formed my opinion of him from this day's inspection, it
would have been very unsatisfactory. I examined the girls for about an hour, but I
had not time to remain longer, as I had been detained in the Boys' school and with the
pupil-teacher.

Bishop's Tawton. Inspected June 14, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master,
and a Girls' school under a mistress, in one room. 2 and 3. Without much discipline
or method. 4. The girls replied nicely to questions upon scriptural subjects, and knew
a little geography and grammar; the boys were less ready with their answers. The
master is not physically a strong person; he appears anxious to please. The mistress
is willing, and seems to take an interest in her work.

Cannington. Inspected June 15, 1849.-1. A mixed school under a master and mis-
tress (man and wife), assisted by four candidates for apprenticeship. 2 and 3. Dis-
cipline and method may be improved. 4. At this time, from want of books, slates,
proper desks, maps, &c., the instruction is very limited, but there is a great longing for
a good and efficient school. 5. The teachers are both very pleasing persons, fond of
their work, and taking much interest in it.

(c) Cut out or make clothes.

5. Master and Mistress.

6. Special.

Plympton St. Mary's. Inspected June 18, 1849.-1. A Boys' school under a master
and two apprentices, the first class of girls receiving instruction with the first class of
boys, and the youngest class of boys receiving instruction under the mistress. 2, 3,
and 4. The discipline, method, and instruction are none of them improved during the
past year. The pupil-teachers appear to have had great care taken with them, both
morally and intellectually, and have passed a satisfactory examination. 5. The master
is about to leave, and a fresh master, with an efficient mistress, (I believe) appointed.
The Girls' school at present is far from efficient. It was only partially examined
by me.
Milverton. Inspected June 23, 1849.-1. A Mixed school under a master, his wife
one male pupil-teacher, and one male and two female candidates for apprenticeship.
The elder girls, forming part of the first and second classes, are under the master;
the other children, excepting the infants, are separated according to sex. 2 and 3.
Discipline and method fair, in each of the schools. 4. The instruction of the first-
class boys and girls good, sound, and general; great pains taken with the religious
knowledge. The younger children might receive more oral teaching with advantage.
5. The master pleasing and intelligent, and doing much good. The mistress not
equally efficient. The master obtained his certificate in 1848.
Wiveliscombe. Inspected June 21, 1849.-1. A Boys' and Girls' school under a
master and his wife. 2 and 3. Discipline and method not sufficiently regarded.
4. Instruction very limited. The population of this parish seems to require a good
school, yet there is a great deficiency in attainment and intelligence amongst the
children. 5. The master and mistress, I think, with perseverance, might be much
more successful. The latter certainly seems anxious, but I do not think that the master
sufficiently enters into the responsibility of a school teacher, under whose care is placed
the charge of immortal souls.

Hambridge. Inspected June 22, 1849.-1. A Mixed school of very little children under
a dame, who takes great care of them, but does not attempt to do more than teach
them to read and write, and work with their needle a little; a few of the elder chil-
dren work an easy sum in addition, short multiplication, and division; even in this she
has not been very successful. 2. Discipline fair. 3. No particular method attempted.
Lovington. Inspected June 25, 1849.-1. A Mixed school (erected for the united
parishes of Alford, Lovington, Hornblottom, and East Lydford) under a master and one
candidate for apprenticeship. The wife of the master instructs the girls in needle-work
every afternoon. 2 and 3. Discipline and method satisfactory. 4. The instruction has
been taken pains with, and is, on the whole, fair. 5. The master is a quiet, pleasing,
well-informed person; he was under training at Chichester for nine months.
