Excerpt: ...Cumpan/, ' for the purpose of erecting and keeping in repair a bridge over the Androscoggin river at Hemlark bland, between the towns of Bet/tel and Hanomr, in the county of Oxfard, in the direction and manner described in saidact of incorporation, and thereafterwards, to wit, on the It'!/till/I day of /flay, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and stlrly-xix, at said Bet/tel, in consideration that the plaintifls. at the request of the said defendant, has admitted him to take one share of the par value of _/ifty dollars each in the capital stock of said corporation, and to become a proprietor therein; he, the said defendant, then and there undertook and faithfully promised and agreed with the plaintiffs that he would pay all assessments on the same for the purpose of constructing a toll-bridge across the Ana'ro.r: a_;rgin river at Ht-mlar/e Island, connecting Bet/tel and Hana!/tr. And the plaintiffs aver, that they, relying on the said promise and undertaking of the said defendant, thereafterwards made, constructed, and erected said toll-bridge across the Adrasrogjgin river, at llemlozk lrltmrl, connecting Bethe! and Hanover; and after the making of said promise by the said defendant, to wit, on the rixteml/t day of_/um, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and.u'xtyxix, the plaintiffs made an assessment of five dollars upon each and every share in the said stock so agreed to be taken, to be paid into the treasury of said corporation agreeably to the bylaws of said corporation; and thereafterwards, to wit, on the (Invent/1 day of Marc/1, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixtyrrurn, the plaintiffs made a szcomi assessment of Im dollars on each and every of the shares so agreed to.
