Head-On reflecting scalp and removing calvarium, the dura is slightly tense. On incising dura there is a marked increase of cerebrospinal fluid in sub-arachnoid space and the capillaries of the arachnoid are enormously congested. Examination of the base of the skull and middle ears fails to show any lesion. The brain preserved in toto for further examination.

On

On incising the muscles of the back and removing the spinous processes of the vertebrae, the dura mater of the spinal cord is found tense. On incising this there is again increase of fluid. removing cord and incising dura and making careful transverse sections thruout its extent, aside from slight congestion of the anterior horns, there is no evidence of lesion.

(Note Further examination of the brain by Dr. McDaniel shows an apparent abnormality in the size of various portions of Ammon's horn on one side. Material fron cerebellum and this horn were used for inoculation into rabbits and for direct examination for Negri bodies.)

Diagnoses

1. Rabies.

2. Edema and congestion of brain and cord.

3. Congestion of abdominal viscera, including liver, spleen and kidneys..

4. Hypertrophy of heart.

5. Slight cutaneous excoriations.

6. Slight arteriosclerosis.

(From report of Jan. 15, 1913, to Executive Officer, Drs. Clark and Steen)

"The microscopic examination of smears and sections failed to show unquestioned Negri bodies. Certain extracellular bodies were found which took the ecsin stain and somewhat resembled Negri bodies. Very few intracellular bodies were found which were not clear cut and we are unable to pronounce them Negri bodies. Two rabitts (Nos. 1843 and 1844) were inoculated from a portion of the brain on December 30. Both rabbits became sick yesterday and died today. The symptoms were the usual symptoms of rabies. Negri bodies were found in abundance in the ammonshorn of both rabbits. Our diagnosis in this case must be rabies.

Rabies was diagnosed in 39 of 94 specimens from lower animals received during the year ending December 31, 1913. The 39 positive cases came from 30 localities in 17 counties as shown by the accompanying map.

During the two years ending December 31, 1913, 542 persons were registered for the Pasteur preventive treatment for rabies. Three hundred twenty-six animals-294 dogs, 22 cats, 5 bovines, 4 horses and 1 human being, were implicated in infecting these persons.

Of the 381 persons who were treated during the year 1912, 378 came from 47 localities in 17 counties in Minnesota, as shown in the accompanying map, No. 5 and 3 came from 3 localities outside of the state.
