The hospital receives funds from the Community Chest but not from the city. During the year, 1,351 patients were admitted from the Community Chest, and given 12,510 days of care. For this the hospital received $17,120.54. There were 14,600 visits made to the out-patient department during the year. Episcopal Hospital, 1147 Fifteenth Street NW.-This is a special hospital controlled by the Episcopal Church and for the exclusive use of eye, ear, nose, and throat patients. It has a rated capacity of 100 beds and has 100 beds set up for use. The occupancy rate of this hospital has not been high in past years, but has been increasing, and in 1937 the average occupancy was 75 percent. The beds are assigned as follows: 26 private beds, 14 semiprivate, and 60 ward beds. Seven of these are set aside for colored male patients and 11 for colored female; 16 are assigned for children. In 1937, there were 6,462 patients admitted to the hospital for a total of 27,518 days' care. The average stay was only 4.3 days. During the same year, 6,329 operations were performed. The per diem operating cost was $7.24. This hospital receives funds from the Community Chest but not from the city. During the year, 1,304 patients were admitted from the Community Chest for 9,481 days' care, for which the hospital was paid $21,526.75. The hospital operates a large out-patient clinic and received 60,582 visits during the year. While this hospital has in past years operated considerably below capacity, the past year's work indicates a rapid approach to maximum utilization of beds. This completes a very brief discussion of bed facilities and occupancy of the 9 general voluntary hospitals, the 3 special voluntary hospitals, and Freedmen's General Hospital. The municipal hospitals will be discussed in detail in another section of the report.
