1. Translate into French:

We have often heard men who wish, as almost all men of sense wish, that women should be highly educated, speak with rapture of the English ladies of the sixteenth century, and lament that they can find no modern damsel resembling those fair pupils of Ascham and Aylmer who compared, over their embroidery, the styles of Isocrates and Lysias, and who, while the horns were sounding and the hounds in full cry, sat in the lonely oriel, with eyes riveted to that immortal page which tells how meekly and bravely the first great martyr of intellectual liberty took the cup from his weeping gaoler.

2. Account for the suffix -ment in the formation of French adverbs. Derive céans, maintenant, naguère, désormais, assez. What were the earlier equivalents of beaucoup?

3. Make a list of Latin prepositions which have survived in French, giving both the earlier and the modern form. What French prepositions are formed from substantives? What from adjectives and adverbs?

4. Give examples of French compounds formed by means of nouns, shewing in each case the derivation from earlier Latin forms.

5. Translate the following idiomatic expressions:

Ce pauvre enfant a le cœur gros.-Vous avez fort bonne mine dans votre nouvel uniforme.-Il n'y a pas là de quoi fouetter un chat-Nous allons tomber de mal en pis.-Il me fait dresser les cheveux avec ses contes horribles.-Chapeaux bas!—Chacun a son dada.

7. What is Boileau's advice to dramatists? on Molière.

(i) Explain the difference between hievon (1. 22) and von ihm. (ii) Give the indicative present and imperfect of enstehen and verlassen.

2. Give the German for:

The king should be honoured and loved by all his subjects.—They depend on your assistance.

(ii) A resolution proposed in such very kind and flattering terms, and accepted with such an evidently sincere expression of good will, may justly be taken by the recipient as a guarantee that he has lent his aid to an enterprise, on the accomplishment of which he will hereafter be able to look back with feelings of satisfaction and pride.
