ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH COMPANY. TO CONTRACTORS, ENGINEERS, SHIPBUILDERS, IMPORTANT TO MANUFACTURERS,

Opening of the Cable to the Public.

PROVISIONAL TARIFF AND TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS.

In the looked-for event of success to the renewed effort to connect Europe with America by telegraph, it is expected that the cable will be open for public business about the end of the present month.

The extent to which the telegraph between Europe and America will be used by the public is at present purely conjectural. It may, however, be assumed as in any case likely to be considerable, and as the capacity of a single telegraphic cable is very limited, the Directors feel that in arranging the charge for messages, it will be necessary to proceed experimentally, their desire being to discover the lowest charge at which the cable can be kept fully and usefully employed until it may be possible, by means of additional cables and improved appliances, so to increase the rate of transmission as thereby to gradually render it possible to popularise the tariff, which can only be done by extending the working powers of the Company.

The annexed regulations as to tariff have therefore been determined on in the first instance. The Directors have thought it would add much to public convenience to make a universal charge for each of the great telegraphing sections of the world, thus relieving those who use the cable from all calculations as to local charges, the payment of all which is included in the charges made by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, for which they undertake to defray the whole cost of transmission from the te egraph station at which the message originates to that of its destination.

In thus offering a great public facility, it must be distinctly understood that the Atlantic Telegraph Company will not incur or accept any liability whatsoever, either for the due transmission of the message to the cable, or for its safe delivery at its destination; nor will they accept any liability arising from delay or stoppage by reason of any accident to the cable or the instruments. Nor will they consent to be liable for any sum whatever, under any circumstances whatever, as damages or otherwise, for loss aceruing from errors, mist kes, delays, or other causes in respect to any message entrusted to them. beyond the return of that portion of the charge aceruing to the Company out of the amount received, in case the agents of the Atlantic Telegraph Company itself shall fail in transmission of the message through the cable.

GUTTA-PERCHA MILL BANDS.

THE GUTTA-PERCHA COMPANY beg to state that the increasing demand for the Gutta-Percha Strapping for Driving-bands, Lathe-straps, &c., fully justifies the strong recommendations they have every where received.

Their durability and strength-permanent contractibility and uniformity of substance-their non-susceptibility of injury from contact with oils, grease, acids, alkalies, or water-and the facility with which the only joint required can be made in bands of from 200 ft. to 300 ft. long--render them superior to leather for almost all working purposes and decidedly more economical.

economy and saving of time, effected by the use of your Patent Gutta Percha Bands in lieu of Leather Straps. The stoppage of one portion of our works through the failing of the leather strap used to be of daily occurrence-but with this annoyance we are now never troubled. We have had these straps in operation for nearly three years, and are assured by our engineer that they effect a saving to us of at least THIRTY POUNDS a year."

From JAMES ABERNETHY and Co., Fury Hill Foundry, Aberdeen.

"We have now bad Gutta-Percha Bands working here for three years. One of them has been driving the fan blast for our smith's shop for all that time, and for anything we see, may drive it as long again. The speed of the fan is but 1,200 per minute. We have used them with com→ plete satisfaction, driving circular saws, and in some cases where leather hands would have been quite inapplicable from damp. We have uniformly endeavoured to have the drums and pulleys so proportioned to the strain, as that there is no chance of the band slipping; and with this precaution, and taking care in using cross bands that they do not rub, we are quite satisfied that they are superior in every respect to leather-stronger at the same weight, and keeping WORKS, quite straight in working-requiring no lacings, and very seldom any repairs."

GENTLEMEN,-In reply to your enquiry, we beg to say that the
Composition you sent us for removing and preventing scale in our

For all permanent Joints is can be made to set as hard as Iron, and it will Expand and Con tract in the same ratio as the metal itself. For all other Joints it ean be made sufficiently elastic for the purposes to which India rubber or other packings is applied.
