"The Y. M. C. A.'s are planning a 'Health Sunday,' and will send speakers to groups of men in shops and factories in the great industrial centers of the State. The Y. W. C. A. will do the same work among women. The Methodist churches, through their tuberculosis committee, will probably have much aid in a church 'tuberculosis day.'

"The school improvement work of the State will help. The State Medical Society has already appointed a committee to take part. The patriotic orders of women will do battle for Tennessee of today. It is expected that other civic and welfare societies will announce their participation in the State's struggle against needless disease and premature death. And the conflict will go beyond State boundaries because already the example has helped to stir sister States of the South."

For the first time in the history of Tennessee the State Democratic platform contained a plank bearing upon the public health of the State, which shows the importance of the position to which this subject has attained. The plank on public health as contained in the plaform is as follows:

(Extract from the State Democratic Platform.)

TUBERCULOSIS AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASES.

"We heartily approve and commend the efforts of the municipal and county officials and physicians of the State to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and pledge ourselves to cooperate in this humane and necessary work.

We further favor the building of a hospital for consumptives at the main prison, which will separate them. from healthy convicts, so as to prevent the spread of consumption among the inmates of our State prison.

We indorse the efforts of the State Board of Health to prevent epidemics and the spread of communicable diseases and favor all necessary appropriations to aid the work."

The Davidson County Democratic Convention also adopted a plank on public health in its platform, which is as follows:

"To the end that the best efforts of the State and its people may be put forth to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and to aid in the cure of those afflicted with this disease and ameliorate their condition, the nominees of this convention are hereby instructed to present for the consideration of both houses of the General Assembly of the State measures which shall provide for the construction, furnishing and maintenance of two or more hospitals or camps by the State suitably located and arranged which shall be used for the care and treatment of patients afflicted with this disease, one or more for white patients, and one or more for colored patients, to be separately maintained at different points.

The nominees of this convention are hereby further instructed to vote for and urge by all honorable means the passage of these measures and the sufficient appropriation from the public treasury to annually maintain them. In this connection we concur in the recommendations contained in resolutions adopted by the Tennessee delegation to the recent International Congress on Tuberculosis, looking to the creation of a State Tuberculosis Commission for Tennessee.

As a result of the investigations and recommendations of the State Board of Health several of the State institutions have been able to make provisions for isolation and better treatment of their tubercular inmates, but owing to the inadequate appropriations made for such purposes to these institutions the accommodations, which it is possible for them to accord tubercular patients at the present time, leaves much to be desired.

Too much praise cannot be accorded the county and city boards of health throughout the State for their unselfish and indefatigable efforts in furthering this campaign.

In conclusion I desire to express our deep gratitude to the press throughout the State for their loyal and constant support of this movement, which has contributed more than any other single feature in making this great work possible and insuring its ultimate success.
