FIVE YEARS have clapsed since the last edition of “ VIVE Crockford's CLERICAL DIRECTORY" appeared, and the many changes which have since taken place through deaths and preferments among the Clergy have entailed an amount of labour for the present edition which could not well be calculated at the outset, and have delayed its publication considerably beyond the time promised for its appearance. The delay, however, it is trusted, will prove an advantage, in as far as it has permitted us to make many important corrections. In the last edition, the names of 17,500 of the English Clergy were recorderl. In tho present cdition, the names of about 20,500 will be found. Every entry in the last edition has been revised, without exception, and the proof sheets of the whole work have passed under more than one revisal. The populations of the various parishes have also been corrected from the census of 1861. Most of the information in the English list has been supplied by the Clergy themselves. To those clergymen who have so promptly replied to our circular, and who have so largely contributed to the fulness and accuracy of the Directory, our best thanks are due. Notwithstanding this care and precaution, it is probable that some errors have crept into ihese pages and some mistakes in previous editions perpetuated in the present onc. We trust that, if any such should be discovered, they will be found to be of little moment, and that they will be kindly pointed out to us with a view to their correction in a future edition. It was intended to have given the Clergy List of the Irish Establishment on the same plan as that of the English. List, but the circulars issued were so sparingly returned that, after a very considerable outlay, the design was most reluctantly abandoned. Through the courtesy and liberality of Alexander Thom, Esq., we have been permitted to extract from his encyclopædic "Irish Almanack and Official Directory " the tables of dignitaries, incumbents, and revenues of the Irish Church, which for fulness and accuracy of information leaves little to be desired.
