What were the vows of the Nazarites? Explain St. Paul's conformity with them on the occasion of his fifth visit to Jerusalem. (d) Whence did the custom of chanting the Psalms originate? (e) Wherefore does Paley reject the coincidence noticeable between 1 Cor. xi. and St. Luke's account of the institution of the Eucharist, although the conformity is close between them? How was the site of the future temple divinely indicated? What had already happened on that spot? Where had sacrifices been previously offered? Explain and give context, "The five sons of Michal"; "The Gittite"; "David mourned for his son every day"; "He slew two lionlike men of Moab." (b) On what occasions did Moses and Samuel exercise priestly functions (see Psalm xcix. v. 6)? What Eastern custom is alluded to (Psalm ci. v. 8)? Give internal indications of date from Psalm cii. Show that in Psalm civ. the same order of creation is observed as in Gen. i.; explain vv. 3, 4. 10. In this "Divine Ode of Creation," man alone is represented as toiling. Psalm cv. records the early history of Israel; three great miracles are mentioned as occurring between the Exodus and the entrance into Canaan; one is altogether omitted; name these, and explain vv. 14, 15, also the references to the Covenant and its renewal. Notice that the ninth Egyptian plague is placed first. Psalm cvi. describes the provocation in the wilderness; detail the allusions of vv. 14, 16, 28, 32. |
