Senate met, pursuant to adjournment of the 17th day of April, 1871, at 12 o'clock M.

Lieutenant-Governor Dougherty in the chair.

Prayer by Rev. Dr. Hale.

The journal of April 17, 1871, was reat by the Secretary and approved.

The President then presented the following resignation of O. B. Knickerbocker, Second Assistant Secretary of the Senate:

HON. JOHN DOUGHERTY, President of the Senate:

SIR: On account of business engagements, I am compelled to offer to you this my resignation of the office of Second Assistant Secretary of the Senate of the State of Illinois.

Mr. Washburn asked leave of absence for Mr. Crawford until Mon

day next; which was granted.

Mr. Williams asked leave of absence for Mr. Richardson, on account

of sickness; which was granted.

At 12:28 o'clock P. M.,
