Article regarding vacation rule-The company's on this subject is not to the liking of local chairman nor to your general comand the matter will be gone into ther

your mittee,

us take the money and repudiate the argument made by the general committee in our behalf. It was argued that we (the men on the line of read) wanted some time off, but by accepting the money it kills the argument, so everybody, insist on their being off.

Article 10, overtime rule The rate has been increased from 30 to 35 cents an hour for ne offices and 40 to 45 cents for relay offices, and dates back to March 1st. If you made any overtime in March and April, you should have been given the difference of 5 cents an hour on the check you received on or about June 10th. In the same article, Paragraph B, note the words "before and after." Each man at an office should know exactly what time he is supposed to go on duty and go off as well; by inserting the words quoted would give a 50-cent call for even five or ten minutes' work, should you be called that much earlier than your regular hours. This is important to you.

oughly. Referring to the division operators, circular letter No. 7, June 4, 1914: If you have been in service two (2) years and are now hold. ing a regular trick, make claim for fifteen days' vacation; if in service one (1) year and are now holding a regular trick, make claim for seven days' vacation, and turn the cases over to your local chairman. In a previous circular letter the division operator offered pay if vacation was not wanted, and quite a few asked for the money. Boys, it will be casy to lose this great concession that we fought so hard for if a good bunch of

Article 11 has been changed considerably, the 50 cents per day penalty rate within switching limits has been eliminated, and it is a straight dollar a day, with the exception that you do not get it if taken into "GX" or "DS" - offices. Regular men working elsewhere during vacation season should not overlook this. Another important feature of this article (while it has been in effect in the old schedule) should not be overlooked in this schedule: Any employe taken to relieve an agent will receive relief agent's pay, and if necessary that you go to an office other than where your regular trick is located, you will be entitled to the $1.00 per day; if relieving an agent at the same point, the $1.00 will not apply, but you should get the relief agent's salary.

Note Article 13-Scrubbing floors, cleaning windows, etc.: See that your office is kept neat and clean.

Article 1-The hours-of-service rule: For the benefit of the outlying brother agents, in offices where there is just one employe, ten hours, exclusive of "one" meal hour, constitutes a day's work. It was understood by some of the membership that the company could shove two meal hours (dinner and supper) in on this article. This is wrong. Should you go on duty at 7 a. m., you should have one hour off for meals between time limits named, and then your day's work should end at 6 p. m.; after that, overtime.

Article 16 has been changed and should be quite a help to the membership.

The last few meetings have been fairly well attended. The warm weather might keep some back, but bear in mind that those you have elected to look after your interests work just as hard in the warm weather as they do in cool weather; therefore, you should attend all the meetings called and encourage the good work.

Now, look squarely at the appeal for one-half (or any part you could spare) of the first month's increase. Our general committee was on the firing line nearly seven months, cutting the committee down as low as consistent, and did not levy one cent of an assessment on us. I think

this is remarkable for our committee. It did the right thing by us, now let us build the treasury up again to a point that will put former records

in the clear.

Also pay your dues promptly. This will make the work of your local chairman much lighter. Let's all have our dues paid up for this term when Bro. Frasher sends his report to Bros. Yeager and Olwell. Another point in building up the treasury is to insist on all the nons becoming members at once. The only offices that have regular men who are nons are: Layton third, Bertha first, second and third, Finleyville second, Washington second and third, Bakerstown second and third, Butler second, agents at Chicora, Valencia, Knox, Tylersburg, Sheffield Jct. Everybody work on these fellows, and don't forget the first and third wire chiefs in "DS" Pittsburgh, "RO" and "BO," and also M. Maratta, a brother to the hard-shell non at Valencia.

Bro. Browning, of Broadford; Driscoll, of Ellrod; Anderson, of Marion Jct.; Douglas, of Laughlin Jct., and Carruthers, of Rand, all firsttrick men, recently enjoyed their fifteen-day vacations (with pay); pretty fine, eh? Brothers, now to hold that, all we want is a thorough, solid membership and in time a closed shop; that time is nearing its mark.

Bro. J. S. Hubley, of Wheeling Jct., recently journeyed to Chambersburg, Pa., to bury his father. The membership extend their sympathy. Bro. Korn, of Liberty avenue, was also called to his old home on account of death in his family. Sister Pauline Dunvan has left us to assist her father in a new general store at Hoboken, Pa.

Bro. G. F. Brew, of Division 52, and Bro. A. T. Lee, of Division 17, did not stay with us very long. Bros. S. R. Rader and H. E. Shearer, of Division 8, have been transferred to this division.

Bro. Billups, of Marion Jct., is enjoying a trip East, including a sea voyage from Norfolk to New York.

Bro. L. L. Williams, of Rand, is acting relief agent at Bruin, billing out high-grade oil.

Sister Smart is back at Liberty avenue, after being bumped by Bro. Moon. Sister Park is enjoying a trip to California. Sister Askey is now doing the extra stunt. Nothing like being able to work 'em all. Sister Marr, Goehring second, is on her fifteen-day vacation, and Baden is all decorated up for the event. Bro. Frampton, first Harmony Jct., is back off his fifteen days; claims he can do his work justice now.

Sister Clutter is doing vacation relief about Callery and Downieville, and is right on the job. Bro. Murray, of "DS," spent his vacation visiting interesting and picturesque points on the B. & O. one day. "GS" Chicago os'd him arriving there, and in a few minutes os'd him out again for the Stock Yards.

Bro. Rison, second is back at "GN."

Bro. Fair, extra "SC," has a new Remington. Bro. Fair was recently married.

Bro. McElhiney bid in "SC" third.

Bro. Young, third "RO," took ill on Decoration Day and was unable to see the Pirates play.

[blocks in formation]

Bro. L. L. Williams is now relief agent and operator up the "snake path."

Bro. Robison, third at "WD," is having a new house built at Lakewood.

Bro. Isman, second Wheeling Jct., is back, after a month off.

Reduction tower being rebuilt will probably be a three-trick job again.

Clarence Baker, Mr. Day's clerk, is back again, after a long illness.

Brothers, keep after those few nons among the extra men.

Bro. Kepler bid in "BG" second.

Bro. Darling is at "RO" extra.

The operators' ball team won three out of five from the firemen. Dispatcher Brown was a good

rooter.

Bro. Keith, second "RO," had to work twelve hours one night recently, Bro. Young being sick. Many thanks to Bros. Rish, Yeager, Bolton and Martinak for the items furnished me. 1 hope more of you will help, so we can have a good write-up each month. Come again, you four brothers. This is my first attempt, but will de my best.

Bro. P. G. Waterhouse is extra vacation reliet in "DS." Bro. Drumm, "NS," has returned from his vacation, and, unfortunately, had sickness in his family while away.

Bro. Emswiller, of "DS," spent his ten-day vacation in the vicinity of Glenwood shops, playing ball. He fears he might get lost if he went away from home, He is thinking of taking a trip with Local Chairman Yeager. He will never be afraid to go alone after that.

Everyone remember the joint meeting of all roads entering Pittsburg, to be held in Century Building, twelfth floor, Sandusky street, between Duquesne Way and Pennsylvania avenue, Wednes day, July 29, 1914, 10 a m. and 7:30 p. m. There will be lots of talkers there, and we want a good, big delegation from the B. & O. present. C. L. KEITH, Div. Cor., Cert. 3125, Willow Grove.

New Castle Division, East End

Mr. Wenchel, from the Erie, assigned to relief work, goes to "BD” from “XN." His application is promised.

Bro. Ault secured the application of Mr. Pennel, third "WE." We welcome him to our ranks.

Bros. Marshall and Artz, "TF" tower, had a fine time during their fifteen days' vacations, and a full dinner pail awaited them upon their return to duty.

Your correspondent had the pleasure of meeting our local chairman while on his fifteen days' vacation, and found him all smiles, puffing away on his pipe of five brothers, as though he was making a run for Akron Jct. hill.

Bro. Foley, third "BI," could not report for duty on June 10th, and Bros. McLaughlin and Hennen had to double. Bro. Foley has experienced some trouble lately with his limb, and is still confined to his room under care of a physician. We sympathize with him, and hope he will soon be at work again. Bro. Deiter is relieving him.

Bro. Jack, at "XN," contemplates going to Dublin on his vacation. If Bro. Mack, at "BD," could get his at the same time he might accompany him, although his destination would doubtless be Scotland.

The nons have been furnished blanks, and as they have secured enough back pay to get an up-to-date through the efforts of the O. R. T., we expect their applications without further delay, as they can not say that the O. R. T. has never done them any good. AUNT SOPHIA, Cert. 933.

New Castle Division, West End

Some of the boys are enjoying their vacations secured in the last schedule. Local Chairman Ault used a week of his going over the road and lining up the nons. We hope the desirables will

all come in as promised.

Bro. C. F. Adams has decided to stay in the insurance business, and Lodi third is up for bids. Bro. Dieter went to Easton "X" second one wight on account of temporary single track.

Bro. Richards, from "FS" tower, is spending some of his vacation on the west end, and Mr. Shannon, of Creston, is spending his at points in Indiana and Wisconsin; relieved by Relief Agent Spielman.

Two months' increase in salary at some of the offices on this division will nearly pay a whole year's dues. What excuse has that non got now? "No card, no favors." CERT. 758.

Bro. J. A. Gallaher was on duty with General Superintendent Williams' car over the division recently.

Bro. R. B. Kennedy has resumed on first Barrackville after six months' leave.

The day meeting at Wheeling was not held on account of train No. 17 being late, and Bro. Yeager, of Pittsburg Division, being called to Baltimore at the last moment. Night meetings there and at Fairmont day time were held with a fair attendance, but more of the boys could reach these meetings with a little effort.

New cards are now in order. If you have not got one yet, get it at once, and help land the non next door. Solid organization is what we are all working for and must have to get the benefit of our schedule. Three new ones taken in this month-Bros. R. F. Fetty, J. A. Gallaher and E. E. Jackson-while several delinquents have paid up, which gives us a good start toward again topping our membership record, and we want to close the year with 140 members.

Bro. Burt Sutton, agent Denver, went to Pittsburg recently to bring Mrs. Sutton home to the West Virginia hills.

Bro. F. H. Jones is relieving at Cameron tower, and will clear all three tricks. DIV. COR.

Brothers, District No. Two, Monongah DivisionBro. C. M. Baker, of Camden, on Gauley "PO" Lanes Bottom, has consented to act as Correspondent of this district. Send your items direct

to him for publication or to me and I will assist him.

I wish to ask each brother to remit promptly your semi-annual dues, and do not get behind. We have finally succeeded in securing better wages and working conditions. We must all keep up to date in order that we may be stronger and better in the future.

Remember the non; don't give him up; write him until he gives you an answer. I want every member to get after every non you know of, give me his name so that I may write him. If we all pull together and show them that we are interested in their welfare we can accomplish much good. Remember, "No card, no favors," and live strictly up to it.

I have personally written five different letters to non-members on this district, and they do not show me the courtesy of a reply. Make yourselves a committee of one and get busy and assist in this work.

Our general committee had a long, hard pull, which finally resulted in victory, which we should all feel proud of and ever stand ready to assist them in the future.

Give the company good service and show that we appreciate the raise of wages and betterment of working conditions, and we will stand a better chance for success next time.

The vacation season is at hand, and I ask that every one of you take your vacation in lieu of the pay. A man who has worked the year out is entitled to the rest, which will do you more good than the money, consequently be prepared to take the vacation when offered.

I thank each and every one of you for the assistance given me during my term of office, an 1 regret I am so situated that it has been impossible for me to get out and meet you all personally. K. O. WADE, Local Chairman.
