It was my last morning at the Sunday-school; for after making many inquiries, and waiting nearly a year before she could meet with a place which she thought suitable for me, my mother had at last agreed that I should go as undernursemaid in the family at Springfield Lodge, a large and handsome house about five miles from our village. My teacher, Miss Walton, had been anxious that I should go to some little place nearer home, as some of my schoolfellows had done, in order, as she said, that I might gain something both in years and experience before going out into the world: but my mother had resolved that I should live in what she called a good family from the beginning of my service; and as no place of the kind she wished became vacant in our own immediate neighbourhood, she was very glad when she heard of this situation, and through the kind recommendation of a neighbour succeeded in obtaining it for me.
