AN ATLAS AS A PRESENT.

LORD SALISBURY on a celebrated occasion advocated the use of "large scale maps" as an antidote to panic. Most people, however, can spare neither the money nor the room for a thoroughly good collection of large scale maps, and must therefore fall back on those smaller collections which exist as Atlases. An Atlas to be useful must be recent, but as a good new Atlas is an expensive luxury several times in a lifetime, many a man goes through years of dinners, and wears out dozens of suits before giving the intellectual side of his nature the stimulating treat of a new Atlas. This mental starvation may be cared for by his friends. On his majority or birthday, on his wedding, be it ordinary, silver, or golden, at Christmas, or any of the various occasions when it is a kindly custom to give presents, a good new Atlas will be highly appreciated by an intelligent man, especially if he is a great newspaper reader, as most of us are nowadays. With such a present constantly in use, we should not ask our friends to deliver a small parcel for us in Calcutta, when they are going to Bombay or Madras, nor should we start for our holidays in the Lake District or on the west coast of Scotland without plenty of macintoshes if we had first glanced at one of Stanford's rainfall maps. Life is made appreciably easier by the intelligent use of maps, and the man who grudges a few shillings on the best maps and guide-books obtainable deserves any annoyance or mishap which may befall him. He will return poorer both in mind and pocket than if he had started on his travels with a pound or two more luggage, the want of which has had but one result-vexation of spirit.
