"No work of greater beauty will be produced than that on which John Gould, returning in his later life to his first love, bestowed the fulness of his energy and the acme of his artistic talent. We allude to his 'Birds of Great Britain.' The care bestowed on the plates of this work was remarkable, the aim of the author being to produce a picture of the birds as they appeared in their Natural Haunts, and especial pains were bestowed on the Young, particularly those of the Wading-Birds and Natators. In this fine work most of the drawings were developed and placed on stone by Mr. W. HART, who also executed all the plates of the later works."-Nature, 1881.

RECENTLY COMPLETED, UNDER THE SUPERINTENDENCE OF MR. BOWDLER SHARPE, OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM:

THE BIRDS of ASIA, comprising 530 plates, most beautifully coloured
by hand after Nature in the most perfect manner attainable; with copious
Descriptions, complete in 35 parts
each £3 3s.

Bound in 7 vols. new half morocco extra, gilt edges
Or superbly bound in whole morocco, gilt edges

£120 £145

With the Thirty-fifth Part are issued complete Titles to the volumes; or in Mr. SHARPE'S words, "The Work has been arranged according to the classifications adopted by Mr. GOULD throughout his lifetime; and in giving Title-pages and Indexes to the Species, I have added the exact dates of publication for the benefit of Ornithologists who wish to quote the work."-August, 1883.

The very few COMPLETE SETS it was possible to make up having been for some time disposed of, the work is now wholly out of print, and is rapidly becoming as scarce and valuable as Mr. Gould's other works.

It only remains to state (what is well known to nearly all those acquainted with the subject) that Mr. Gould's death in no way interrupted the completion of the work with the same care which he took during his lifetime, the Publishers having carried it on to its conclusion by the agency of his whole staff of assistants and colourers, under the invaluable superintendence of Mr. BOWDLER SHARPE, of the British Museum, who had been his friend and "right hand " during the later years of his life.

"To no portion of the globe (says the Author) does there attach so much interest as to that vast extent of the Old World which we designate Asia. That the Zoology, then, of such a country should have called forth the notice and study of able minds cannot be surprising; and yet it is remarkable that no one has attempted a work comprehending a general history of its ORNITHOLOGY. This hiatus the present publication is intended to fill up."

THE TROGONIDÆ, or FAMILY of TROGONS. Second Edition, containing nearly 50 coloured plates, with copious Descriptions:

New half morocco extra, gilt edges
New whole morocco extra, gilt edges

£12 12s.

£14 14s.

The present new edition comprises all the New Species, and information acquired respecting this family of Birds during the last twenty-five years.

"The Trogons may dispute the palm of beauty with the Humming Birds. Their plumage in certain parts shines with metallic brilliancy, and exhibits all the colours of the rainbow."-Griffith's Edition of Cuvier. They are also remarkable for THE

IMMENSE LENGTH OF THEIR TAILS.
