PREFACE.

THE object of this little work is to call attention to the vices of our political system, and especially to the abuses of party government. Few will doubt that party, or rather its abuse, is the source of many political evils, and even, at times, of national danger. And at the present moment it is especially mischievous. In the opinion of The Times, at least, its evil influence has culminated in depriving us of self-government. It is no longer the English people, but a comparatively small number of Irishmen, who, thanks to party, now hold the reins of government. "In reality," says The Times of a few days ago, “the government is not the Queen's and not the English people's, but Mr. Parnell's. It is placed.
