The music of the Church of England Hymnal places it at once in the very front rank of such works, and promises it a career of the widest usefulness. For it offers to the user nearly 1,000 tunes, a considerable proportion of which are new, whilst none are such as a refined musical taste, guided by a devotional spirit, would wish to reject. Some characteristics of the work mark it off at once from its competitors. No tune, for example, is used for two hymns, however familiar it may be. There are many new tunes, characterized, not only by remarkable beauty, but also by a devotional spirit. Many of these are by Dr. Mann himself, who shows great skill in writing simple Church-like tunes as well as those of a more ambitious character. But the whole range of English composers is fairly covered, with an equal regard for the old and the new. The harmonies are everywhere satisfactory. Organists and choir-masters, even while the Hymnal is not in use, will find the book worth their attention. LONDON: HODDER & STOUGHTON, 27, PATERNOSTER ROW, E.C.
