Mathematics Made Easy.

A Course of Simple Continuation-School

Lectures on Geometry and Algebra. By the REV. J. J. RAVEN, D.D., F.S.A., Vicar of
Fressingfield, and formerly Head Master of the Grammar School, Great Yarmouth.
Cloth Boards, Crown 8vo, 2s.

This is not the work of a theorist, but the outcome of experience in teaching Mathematics. It is only an introduction to the study of Euclid and Algebra, carrying the pupil along the road, pointing out the path which he should tread, and showing how difficulties may be surmounted. For example, in Geometry the Author conducts his pupils safely over the Pons Asinorum and there leaves them, with the assurance that although they will meet with difficulties on the way, they will know how those difficulties may be overcome.

The lectures may be read with profit by teachers as well as students.

"Girls' Own" Readers. A New Set of Reading Books specially adapted for Girls' Schools.

[blocks in formation]

READING BOOKS, Etc.—Continued.

"The gradation is perfect, the selections new, varied, and interesting. An admirable feature is the consecutive character of many of the stories, which are continued through several lessons, with the result that the Reader is not so 'patchy' as some we could mention. 'Standard' authors have been largely drawn fromanother point worth special mention. As regards binding, type, paper, and illustrations, there is nothing further to wish for. They are a thorough workmanlike and serviceable set of Readers, and deserve to be widely known. We cannot speak too highly of them."-Teachers' Aid.

"The contents are varied, and each book takes a step in advance. We pass on to fairy tales and consecutive stories, biographies, natural history, to extracts from standard authors and daily newspapers. The lessons are carefully graduated, well chosen, attractive, and instructive. The binding is strong and durable, yet tasteful. The type is clear and not crowded, while the illustrations are all that can be desired." -Schoolmaster.

"Seldom we meet with so bright and attractive series of reading books. Altogether the series is one that can be well and confidently recommended as being interesting and instructive, and carefully graduated."-Schoolmistress.

[ocr errors]

'The lessons are most carefully graduated and sufficiently consecutive to create and sustain a healthy interest in the literary treasures from which they are selected. The binding is good, and the printing well spread and very clear."-Board Teacher.

"An excellent collection of reading lessons has been put together. The selection of poetry is judicious throughout, and the poems may be used with advantage for learning by heart. Messrs. Jarrold have followed out their principle of stimulating the intelligence of young readers with success."--Manchester Guardian.
