The motto stamped upon the title-page of these Readers is taken from the speech which Shakespeare represents the fallen Wolsey as addressing to Cromwell :

[blocks in formation]

The lessons have been drawn from various sources, and include events of very recent occurrence; they have been carefully written with the object of placing noble examples of welldoing-physical and moral-before the rising generation, and thereby inculcating a spirit of true heroism calculated to make better men and better citizens. In the earlier books the stories are of a simple character, such as can be readily understood and appreciated by children of an early age; while books V. and VI. give in connected form interesting records of some of the world's brightest jewels, and tell us on the opening page that these

"Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime;
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time."

All the books are well illustrated and strongly bound, and are such as will be attractive to scholars, and establish in their minds pleasant associations with the act of reading.

The Temperance Science Reading Book. By JOHN TOPHAM, Certificated Master; School Lecturer for the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union. Crown 8vo, 245 pages. Many Illustrations. Strongly Bound, 1s. 6d.

"The book is a trustworthy work on the subject; well-arranged, excellently illustrated, and sensibly written. It is plain, informing, and thoroughly interesting as a reading book for schools."-Educational News.

"We wish that the book might speedily find an entrance into every school in the kingdom: the benefit that would accrue to the cause of temperance is incalculable."— Scholastic Globe.

"Several Temperance Readers have been issued, and they have been welcomed by different portions of the people interested in the education of the children. We do not think a better one than this has been issued, and we would recommend all Band of Hope workers to secure a copy."-British Temperance League.

"It is intended principally to be used in day schools as a Temperance text-book, but parents will do well if they obtain it for their children's home reading. While exceedingly instructive, it also possesses all the charm of a story book."-Temperance Work.
