In the first place, they are admirably adapted for use as ordinary literary readers. They are carefully graded, and the subject matter and illustrations have been chosen to meet the varying capacities and ages of the children by whom the books will be read. In the second place, they are intended to assist the teacher in the formation of the character of his pupils, and in the inculcation of good habits and good conduct-works which go on ceaselessly in every wellordered school.

The teaching is brought home to the children by reference to their actual surroundings, and it is illustrated by stories, poems, quotations, proverbs and examples drawn from history and biography.

Due attention has also been given to the important subjects of Hygiene and Temperance, and it will be found that these matters are as fully treated as the time at the disposal of the teacher will permit.
