Through the open gates of gladness
He returns to life once more;
Death and hell before Him bending,
He doth rise the Victor now,
Angels on His steps attending,
Glory round His wounded brow;
Christ is risen! hallelujah!

Risen our victorious Head!
Sing His praises! hallelujah!
Christ is risen from the dead.

3 Christ is risen! henceforth never
Death or hell shall us enthral,
We are Christ's, in Him for ever
We have triumphed over all;
All the doubting and dejection
Of our trembling hearts have ceased,
'Tis His day of resurrection!

Let us rise and keep the feast.
Christ is risen! hallelujah!
Risen our victorious Head!
Sing His praises! hallelujah!
Christ is risen from the dead.

J. S. B. MONSELL. 1867.

1041 Now is Christ risen from the dead.

1 Cor. 15. 20.

Hate to heaven

ALLELUJAH! Hallelujah!

joices

Hearts to heaven and voices raise;

Sing to God a hymn of gladness,
Sing to God a hymn of praise;
He who, on the cross a victim,

For the world's salvation bled,
Jesus Christ, the King of glory,

Now is risen from the dead.

3

And girt with griefs and fears.
Our onward course must be;
But only let that path of tears
Lead us at last to Thee!

Thou art gone up on high;
But Thou shalt come again,
With all the bright ones of the sky

Attendant in Thy train.

Oh! by Thy saving power,

So make us live and die,

That we may stand in that dread hour

At Thy right hand on high!

148th.

MRS. E. TOKE. 1851.

1051 Thou hast ascended on high.—Ps. 68. 18.

1

YOD is gone up on high,

With a triumphant noise :

The clarions of the sky

Proclaim the angelic joys.

Join, all on earth, rejoice and sing,

Glory ascribe to Glory's King.

[blocks in formation]

Let all the nations know
Our Jesus' conquering love.

Join, all on earth, rejoice and sing,
Glory ascribe to Glory's King.

3

All

power to our great Lord

Is by the Father given;

By angel-hosts adored,

He reigns supreme in heaven.

Join, all on earth, rejoice and sing,
Glory ascribe to Glory's King.

4

5

High on His holy seat,
He bears the righteous sway;
His foes beneath His feet
Shall sink and die away.

Join, all on earth, rejoice and sing,
Glory ascribe to Glory's King.

His foes and ours are one,
Satan, the world, and sin;
But He shall tread them down
And bring His Kingdom in.
Join, all on earth, rejoice and sing,
Glory ascribe to Glory's King.

6 Till all the earth, renewed
In righteousness Divine,
With all the hosts of God
In one great chorus join.
Join, all on earth, rejoice and sing,
Glory ascribe to Glory's King.

CHRI

7s.

While they beheld, a cloud received Him out
of their sight.-Acts 1. 9.

YHRIST is gone-a cloud of light
Has received Him from our sight
High in heaven, where eye of men
Follows not, nor angel's ken;
Through the veils of time and space,
Passed into the holiest place;
All the toil, the sorrow done,
All the battle fought and won.

? He is gone-Towards their goal

World and Church must onward roll:
Far behind we leave the past;

Forward are our glances cast:

Still His words before us range
Through the ages, as they change:
Wheresoe'er the truth shall lead,
He will give whate'er we need.

3 He is gone-But we once more
Shall behold Him as before;

In the heaven of heavens the same,
As on earth He went and came.
In the many mansions there,
Place for us He will prepare :
In that world unseen, unknown,
He and we may yet be one.

4 He is gone-But not in vain,
Wait until He comes again:
He is risen, He is not here,
Far above this earthly sphere;
Evermore in heart and mind
There our peace in Him we find :
To our own Eternal Friend,

Thitherward let us ascend.

DEAN STANLEY. 1862.

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST:

HIS DOMINION.

6.5.

All kings shall fall down before Him.
Ps. 72. 11.

AT the name of Jesus

Every knee shall bow,

Every tongue confess Him
King of Glory now;

1053

1

'Tis the Father's pleasure
We should call Him Lord,
Who from the beginning
Was the mighty Word.

2 Humbled for a season,
To receive a Name
From the lips of sinners
Unto whom He came;
Faithfully He bore it,
Spotless to the last;
Brought it back victorious,
When from death He passed.

3 Name Him, brothers, name Him
With love as strong as death,
But with awe and wonder,
And with bated breath;

He is God the Saviour,
He is Christ the Lord,
Ever to be worshipped,
Trusted, and adored.

4 In

your

hearts enthrone Him;

There let Him subdue

All that is not holy,

All that is not true:
Crown Him as your Captain,
In temptation's hour;
Let His will enfold you
In its light and power.

5 Brothers, this Lord Jesus
Shall return again,

With His Father's glory,
With His angel train;
